Radiation Physics are recruiting a Principal Clinical Scientist in Nuclear Medicine Physics. We are looking for someone with experience in nuclear medicine imaging and molecular radiotherapy to participate in our busy molecular radiotherapy service and our routine radionuclide imaging.

The successful candidate will be an HCPC registered clinical scientist, a certificated MPE with relevant experience. Support will be given for individuals wishing to extend their experience to obtain RPA or RWA qualifications. Candidates with HCPC but no MPE are encourage to apply for appointment at a lower band and support to obtain this within an agreed timeframe.

We provide a clinical, scientific and technical service to the Diagnostic and Oncology Directorates of the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust at both Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells sites and to other Departments of the Trust as required. The Section provides a Molecular Radiotherapy Service and provision for support to PET-CT.

The department provides training across all disciplines and levels. The department supports staff undertaking HSST, STP and RCT (and equivalences) or working towards professional certifications.

An allowance can be made for a relocation package (please enquire for further details).

For anyone without MPE certification we can offer half a day of personal development time per week in order to collate a portfolio within an agreed timeframe.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work alongside the Nuclear Medicine Physics team to ensure that all radiation practices within the Nuclear Medicine Departments at MTW comply with regulatory requirements, national guidance and best practice.

They will use their own professional judgement when providing complex, wide-ranging expert advice to clinical staff on the optimisation of patient imaging, quality assurance, radiation dosimetry, radiation safety and the interpretation of scientific results.

In particular, the post holder will be expected to participate in the the molecular radiotherapy programme, including running the established services (which currently routinely includes Ra-223 Xofigo, I-131 ablation and thyrotoxicosis therapies, and occasional Lu-177 Dotatate with a view to establishing a Lu-177 PSMA service in the near future) and working with the Head of Nuclear Medicine Physics and Head of Radiation Physics where required to continually develop the services, including introduction of novel therapies where appropriate.

Qualifications

Essential

  • 1st or 2nd class Honours degree in physics or a relevant subject
  • Relevant accredited MSc or higher degree
  • HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist
  • RPA2000 certification as a Medical Physics Expert in nuclear medicine physics or working towards within an agreed timeframe


Desirable

  • Have or be working towards RPA or RWA certification


Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Post Registration clinical experience in Nuclear Medicine Physics
  • Experience of acting as a Medical Physics Expert in nuclear medicine physics.
  • Expert theoretical and practical knowledge of nuclear medicine equipment
  • Expert theoretical and practical knowledge of molecular radiotherapy in a clinical environment.
  • Expert knowledge of radiation protection, able to act as a Trust expert in area of nuclear medicine and advise on radiation protection.
  • High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from ionising radiations
  • In-depth understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines [e.g. IRR, IR(ME)R, ISO 9001 , RIDDOR, NAIR, COSHH, EPR, MDA/MHRA guidance, HASS]

  • Knowledge and experience of quality systems


Skills

Essential

  • Able to communicate complex information to a variety of audiences (external regulators, managers and multi-disciplinary teams for example) in a variety of situations (conferences, Trust-wide and local meetings for example)
