Specialist Speech and Language Therapist (Deafness), Band 6 PermanentFull Time: 37.5 hours week

Greenwich Children's Integrated Therapies - Speech & Language Therapy Service are looking to appoint a specialist therapist following increased demand for our services with both deaf and hearing children and young people.

This is an opportunity for therapists looking to specialise in deafness, while also continuing to develop their skills in mainstream school years settings. Due to recent expansion of our deaf services, there is scope for the role to include time with a diverse range of both hearing and deaf client groups from early years through to secondary school. We would look to work with the successful applicant to build a role that meets their development needs.

Main duties of the job

The Greenwich Children's Integrated Therapies - Speech and Language Therapy service offer a range of services across three sub-teams: Early Years, School Years and Special Schools. Clinical specialist expertise is available across the whole service and includes: AAC, ASD, Deafness, DLD, Dysphagia and SEMH.

As the post holder you will:
  • independently manage a caseload whilst utilising knowledge and skills of colleagues
  • have opportunity to refine both assessment and intervention skills
  • work as part of an integrated team with Teachers, outreach services and other health professionals
  • support parent/carers and children/young people in all issues related to clinical care with support from more experienced colleagues
  • provide a specialist clinical and advisory Speech and Language Therapy service to children and young people with diverse speech, language and communication needs, including deaf clients
  • work as part of an integrated team with Teachers, teachers of the deaf, outreach services, the local sensory service, audiology and other health professionals. To support parent/carers and the children in all issues related to clinical care with support from more experienced colleagues
  • have opportunities for involvement in service development projects with the deaf team and the mainstream school years team

Job description Job responsibilities

You will be part of the school years team within Greenwich Services, with sessions in deafness which may include early years clients in addition to school years clients.

You will have access to administrative, managerial and clinical support. Training and career development is well supported within Oxleas with the opportunity to attend both internal and external training. Examples of training accessed in the past 12 months includes: Nuffield Dyspraxia, Shape Coding, PECS, Bilingualism, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, with the following training courses upcoming: assessment and intervention for Evidence based for DLD Moor House, Core Vocabulary Intervention, Attention Autism.

  • Recognised degree/equivalent qualification

Experience Essential
  • Experience of working in schools
  • Experience of working with clients with a range of SLCN including Deafness
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team/environment
  • Knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions
Desirable
  • Experience of training others
  • Experience of implementing and supporting a range of therapeutic approaches
Skills Essential
  • Well established knowledge of a range of standardised and functional assessment tools relevant to the client group
  • A working knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to the client group
  • Understanding the roles of other professionals relevant to the client group
  • Ability to communicate complex information to others where there may be barriers to understanding
