We are looking for an enthusiastic, passionate Speech & Language Therapist with an interest in complex communication approaches, AAC, paediatric dysphagia or ASD. Ideally you will already have some experience in this area, or a willingness to learn.

Main duties of the job

You will hold a caseload of children with complex needs, aged 0-5 years, in the community and you may see them across a range of settings, including community clinics, schools and homes.

You may also work with the 0-19 years age range for specific health issues i.e. AAC and dysphagia.

You will be an integral member of the SLT team and work closely with parents, early years centres/nurseries, school staff and other staff to support children's access to the curriculum, implement local clinical pathways in social communication, AAC and dysphagia.

You will run appropriate in service training (specialist training as requested) independently and provide some day to day supervision and peer review support to junior colleagues and students, including second opinions when necessary to support and develop the wider team's clinical competencies in your specialist area. The role will be supported by the Band 7 team leader and the Band 7 Paediatric SLT dysphagia trained therapist. This is a unique opportunity for the right person to develop and implement a specialist skill set in the community.

You will liaise with other colleagues across a range of statutory and non-statutory agencies and will be able to carry out formal and informal paediatric dysphagia and/or AAC and/or complex communication assessments to meet the health needs of children and young people.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Recognised SLT degree or equivalent.
  • Current AHP with UK HCPC registration
  • Member of a relevant Clinical Excellence Network
  • Evidence of competence in managing complex dysphagic patients including those requiring enteral feeding


Desirable

  • Evidence of relevant post-registration education and training e.g. SCERTS, VERVE, Intensive Interaction, Attention Autism, Hanen, Gestalt Language Processing, AAC, Dysphagia, Infant Feeding, Breastfeeding, Tracheostomy


Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience of working in a variety of clinical settings
  • Experience of working and liaising with other MDT professionals
  • Recent experience within community SLT setting, specialising in complex needs and dysphagia
  • Ability to understand complex issues, problem solve and propose solutions.
  • Able to communicate with families and young people in an empathetic manner regarding their treatment and procedures.
  • Experience of supervising/ managing junior staff and students
  • Experience working with families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience in the assessment and management of patients who require AAC
  • Participation in audit research projects service development


Desirable

  • Experience of working within a community paediatric SLT service.
  • Experience of working through the RCSLT NQP and dysphagia frameworks with junior SLTs
