We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic Clinical Psychologist to undertake a range of activities including assessments (primarily those used in the diagnosis of adults with Autism Spectrum Conditions), direct clinical work (including direct psychological therapy developed to meet the needs of autistic people and post diagnostic group work), report writing, supervision of assistant psychologists, assisting in projects and data collection. There are opportunities to gain a broad range of experience and to develop clinical and teaching skills. You will also have the opportunity to be trained in the use of the ADOS if this has not already been completed.

The post is also connected to a number of wider vibrant psychology departments (in Bolton, Trafford and Manchester), where regular meetings and CPD events are held.

Main duties of the job

You will work primarily within the ASC Care pathways, with qualified staff in their clinical and administrative duties. As the job involves working with clients in a specialist context, essential requirements for the post include:
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across a wide range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and inpatient settings
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity
  • Experience gained during supervised training of working with people with autism spectrum conditions
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
  • Awareness of national policy and guidance regarding Autism Spectrum Conditions
  • Broad knowledge and familiarity of autism services and the services in the NHS where autism assessment and treatment are commonly applied
  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with Autism Spectrum Conditions.

Desirable qualities include:
  • Further training in Autism Spectrum Conditions
  • Further training in NICE recommended tools for the assessment & diagnosis of autism spectrum conditions
  • Expertise in the delivery of psychological interventions to people with autism spectrum conditions
  • Experience of supervising Assistant Psychologists.

Job description Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will work in the Trafford team for 2 days a week and the Bolton team for 3 days. You will provide specialist Psychological interventions with autistic adults and also support colleagues with psychological formulations to support their clinical work.

In the Trafford team you will be involved in providing Autism assessments to adults from across Greater Manchester.

In the Bolton team you will be providing post-diagnostic support to adults from the town who have recently received a diagnosis of Autism or who ae currently struggling with an issue relating to their long-standing diagnosis of autism.

There will be an opportunity for some remote working as well as some face-to-face contact with service users.

Person Specification Education Essential
  • Doctoral level (or equivalent) qualification in Clinical Psychology
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and qualification in a psychological therapy
Desirable
  • Further training in Autism Spectrum Conditions.
  • Further training in NICE recommended tools for the assessment & diagnosis of autism spectrum conditions
  • Some further training in at least one psychological therapy.
Experience Essential
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across a wide range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • Experience gained during supervised training of working with Autistic adults.
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
Desirable
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Research experience in autism spectrum conditions
  • oExperience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
