The oncology and haematology department is responsible for providing care and treatment for patients undergoing anticancer systemic treatment in the Norfolk area.

The Acute Oncology and Haematology Service (AOHS) is responsible for the assessment of symptoms and troubleshooting problems over the phone using the UKONS (UK Oncology Nursing Society) triage tool, which is used across the UK in all centres. This provides us with a score, which correlates as to if the patient needs urgent assessment, assessment within 24 hours or self-care advice.

In addition to this, AOHS at the NNUH provides a sit see and wait clinic (open 0800-1900), which is ran by a team of registrars, advanced nurse practitioners and a specialist oncology nursing team. This provides oncology and haematology patients a route of access to hospital services and treatment instead of attending A& E, impacting on both A& E footfall and of course patient experience.

Although we are primarily set up for oncological emergencies (neutropenic sepsis, bowel obstruction, superior vena cava obstruction and metastatic spinal cord compression) we welcome referrals for a variety of reasons related to cancer, which are related directly to their disease or treatment (such as deranged electrolytes, biliary obstruction, disease progression and thrombus diagnosis). Although we do admit patients through AOHS, our primary aim is admission avoidance by providing a same day emergency clinic (SDEC) setting for patients to be reviewed.

Main duties of the job

The role sees candidates utilizing their knowledge of oncological and haematological conditions and treatments to provide concise advice via phone to patients and their carers. They will be part of a wider disciplinary team, working with other specialties and medics to provide patient centered care, which is holistic to each patient seen. They will provide support to other members of the team, stepping into a managerial role when the lead AOS nurse is not present in a fast-paced , high turnover unit.

Job responsibilities

1. Ensure practice is in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and work within limits of competence.2. Assist the Ward/Department manager in maintaining standards of nursing practice.

3. Carry out and advise/supervise junior staff in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluating of nursing care.

4. Carry out the daily personal care of patients.

5. To take charge of the clinical area in the absence of the Ward/Department Sister/ Charge Nurse.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse on the appropriate part of the NMC register
  • Post registration qualification relevant to the clinical area


Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience at Band 5 level, of which some is to be in a position relevant to the specialty
  • Experience of managing and leading a clinical area
