We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced project manager to support the setup and overall project delivery of a haemato-oncology integrated Palliative Care service at The Royal Marsden. The aim of this service is to holistically support patients through early proactive symptom control and future care planning. The Project Manager will ensure the successful planning, stakeholder engagement, data collection and reporting for this project.

We are looking for someone with experience of managing projects in the NHS associated with patient pathways, establishing a new service model whilst working across different clinical teams, working closely with clinical and non-clinical staff at all levels, as well as external stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of this project. They will have excellent project management, communication, report writing and data analytical skills. This role will be supported by a part time project support office who will be line managed by the Project Manager.

This post is fixed term for a period of three years. It will be based primarily on our Sutton site as this is where the delivery of the new service will take place.

Main duties of the job

RMH has a portfolio of diverse and complex projects that support the delivery of the highest quality services for both staff and patients alike.

The Project Manager will support the implementation of an integrated palliative care service for Haematology patients. The project seeks to improve quality of care for patients and reduce inpatient admission length of stay. The post-holder will be responsible for delivering the project on time, to budget and to agreed quality standards that meet business needs. The appointee will liaise with the key internal and external stakeholders, working closely with clinical and information teams.

The role requires a professional project management approach that involves considerable responsibility for coordinating business-critical clinical initiatives in accordance with customer needs, supplier capability and national and local standards and requirements.

The post holder will be based at Sutton.

  • Actively participate and co-operate with any audits carried out by internal and external auditors and the implementation of any associated recommendations. Ensure that a comprehensive record of projects is maintained for any such audit.
  • Develop and maintain with users and supplier(s), and agree with Project Board(s), project initiation documents, and project plans which identify core dates, deliverables and critical paths for delivery. Update project documents regularly and communicate them to the project board and team as relevant and directed.
  • Manage 3rd party suppliers from contract negotiation through to service delivery ensuring that the requirements of the project are documented in the contract, and that suppliers meet their obligations against the needs of the project plan and PID.
  • Assessing project issues, scheduling resources, and managing capacity and conflicts across multiple projects.


Person Specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
  • Prince 2 Foundation level or equivalent project management experience


Desirable

  • Detailed knowledge of project planning, implementation & project management gained through experience of using formal project planning tools
  • Practical experience and an understanding of how to adapt standard methodologies such as Prince2 to suit the project at hand


Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience of working in a complex change environment with multiple stakeholders and securing their engagement to deliver change
  • Experience of influencing staff at all levels to ensure that all members of the team including users and stakeholders own project objectives
  • Experience of working across organisational boundaries to achieve results
  • Detailed knowledge of the NHS & implementation of projects in a hospital environment
  • Demonstrable experience of managing project budgets


Desirable

  • Experience in Requirements Gathering
  • Experience of organising training for projects


Skills Abilities / Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to communicate confidently with staff at all levels, including external Senior Management and at Board level meetings
  • Must have excellent presentation and report writing skills
  • Skilled in negotiation and influencing techniques including the ability to challenge and reality test other's positions constructively
  • Able to collect, collate multi-stranded data from a variety of sources
  • Regularly analysing highly complex and detailed information
  • Proven strong organisational, project management and time management skills
  • Ability to prioritise workload of others while balancing own workload(s)
  • Practical experience of applying and adapting Prince2 techniques
  • Experience of a range of IT programmes
  • Using strong proven capability with MS Office applications including Excel & PowerPoint
  • Proficient in the use of MS Project or an equivalent tool
  • Must have excellent written and verbal skills showing ability to clearly explain very complex processes and procedures relating to IT hardware and software and data, and their interaction with each other and relate this to other job roles


Desirable

  • Experience of communicating effectively with all levels of staff in the NHS, with technical staff and suppliers
  • Experience of using judgement in projects to differentiate between critical path tasks and non-critical
  • Proven ability in sifting through information provided by technical staff, managerial staff and suppliers to extract the important criteria for successful outcomes in managing a project
  • Proven ability to engage all stakeholders and include the D Application form, right tasks in the work breakdown structure of a project Interview & Plan
  • Use of MS Visio or equivalent Experience of business analysis
