An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and motivated HCPC registered Advanced Biomedical Scientist specialising in Blood Transfusion at Band 7 level to join our team.
The post holder will work closely with the Lead Biomedical Scientist and other Biomedical Scientists to provide a laboratory service to the Trust and its users. They will be jointly responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the technical work and staff of the Blood Transfusion section and ensure the timely delivery of a high-quality service at Alder Hey Children's Hospital and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust.
The department is well equipped with Grifols Erytra, Sysmex XN2000, Sysmex CN3000/ CS-2400, Beckman Coulter Navios, Tosoh G8 and Meditech computer system.
The Haematology & Transfusion department has UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation and is accredited for training with the IBMS.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will have responsibility for providing the technical services of the Blood Transfusion section within the laboratory ensuring a continuous 24-hour service is provided.
The post holder along with the Consultant Haematologist, Lead BMS Haematology & Blood Transfusion and Transfusion Practitioner, as part of the Hospital Transfusion Team, will be involved with setting policies and procedures surrounding this specialty. The post holder will also be an active member of the Hospital Transfusion Committee.

Job responsibilities
To work unsupervised as an Advanced Biomedical Scientist, complying with BSQR and maintaining the quality of the Blood Transfusion laboratory.
To prioritise, plan and organise your own work and the work of BMSs, trainee BMSs, MLAs and APs within the Blood Transfusion section on a daily basis ensuring results are produced in an accurate and timely manner.
To liaise with the National Blood Authority to enable the needs of the patients are met.
To monitor and review internal quality control and external quality assurance systems and investigate and correct unexplained trends and results.
To supervise and participate in the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment on a daily basis.
To undertake a wide variety of non-automated, complex operations requiring a high level of skill, knowledge and manual dexterity on a daily basis. These operations may be of a specialised nature due to the quality and size of paediatric specimens.
To contribute to departmental management decisions including participation in departmental meetings.
To produce and regularly review and update Standard Operating Procedures for all techniques and analysers used in a section of the department.
With support from the Lead Biomedical Scientist, train BMS staff to a level to enable them to work alone for long periods, to support the departments out of hours working arrangements.
To submit and deal with incidents recorded on the Trusts reporting system, Quality Management System and MHRA SABRE and SHOT database, ensuring a comprehensive response and develop corrective and preventative action plans where required.
To monitor levels of reagents, blood, blood products and consumable items and place appropriate orders when stocks are running low.
To be involved in the recruitment of staff, participating in interviews and conduct annual performance reviews including the development of a Personal Development Plan (PDP).
To have IT skills to produce reports, spreadsheets and presentations and to understand the laboratory computer system (LIMS).
To carry out MHRA audits to meet the requirements of for the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005 (BSQR) and to carry out department audits to comply with ISO standards (UKAS).

- Registered as a biomedical scientist with Health professions council (HCPC)
- IBMS specialist diploma in relevant subject.
- MSc or HSD in relevant subject
- Completed supervisory, management or leadership course.
- Significant post-registration experience in a hospital blood transfusion laboratory
- Able to demonstrate specialist knowledge in blood transfusion.
- Able to troubleshoot problems in blood transfusion.
Desirable
- Experience and/ or knowledge of paediatric haematology
- Have led a team that has achieved the requirements of BSQR in a hospital transfusion laboratory
