The Radiology Nursing team is made up of 5 registered nurses, our team works alongside many other staff groups, including but not exhaustive of Radiologists, Radiographers, Radiology Support Workers, Admin and clerical and theatre staff as well as the wider medical and surgical teams within the hospital.

Radiology department work clinically within the Interventional Radiology hybrid theatre as well as within the Radiology department. This role provides an exciting opportunity to gain experience and competence within an ever developing area of nursing, providing you with excellent opportunities to learn new practical skills as well as develop knowledge to enable safe and effective pre-assessment to our patient group.

Main duties of the job

? To provide complex and highly skilled nursing support to inpatients and outpatients undergoing a range of radiological procedures, from pre-assessment all the way through until discharge from Radiology care? To work as part of the wider Radiology team, delivering high quality and safe service to patients. This can involve critical and high stress situations within the Interventional Radiology hybrid theatre suite and within the Radiology department? The nursing team offers support and advice to patients and staff where required the post holder will contribute to this on a daily basis? The nursing team ensures that consumables required for the procedures are available and appropriate the post holder will support the lead nurse in this role? This is a training post, with uplift to Band 6 on demonstration of competence to lead decision making within the clinical area as well as participate in the Interventional Radiology emergency over-run/ On-Call system

Works as part of the multi-disciplinary team and contributes to the on-goingdevelopment of the service within the wider trust Frequently discussing complex and sensitive information with patients, some ofwhom may have significant obstacles to understanding including any emotional orphysical factors Communicating frequently with Radiographers, Radiologists, Management team,admin and clerical teams, Medical and Surgical teams, Theatre and anaestheticteams, Community teams and GP surgeries as well as patient relatives and supportstaffAnalytical and judgement Provides safe and effective care to patients undergoing a range of procedures, thisincludes but is not exhaustive of monitoring observations for signs ofdeterioration, administering analgesia, ensuring patient privacy and dignity ismaintained, monitoring pressure area care Monitoring for emotional distress and acting where needed Ensuring emergency situations are managed in a timely manner Take part in face to face and telephone pre-assessment, using knowledge andexperience to make clinical judgements effecting patient care, ensuring allpatients needs are met and considered Escalating any clinical concerns and enabling discussions with the appropriateteams, ensuring the patients needs are met and kept up to date with sometimeschanging situationsPlanning and organisation Manage pre-assessment of patients as inpatients and outpatients in a timelymanner - this includes communicating patient specific needs to the appropriateteams To contribute to the safe and smooth running of all sessions Support Radiological procedures, either directly or by advising others Work in the theatre environment where roles might include supportingConsultant Radiologists through cases or direct patient support Be proactive around stock control and replenishment of consumables To offer phone support to patients who are seeking advicePhysical skills Manual dexterity and ability to use fine motor skills when assisting theRadiologist Surgical scrub technique, maintaining asepsis during clinical procedures Wearing of lead protection during some clinical procedures inline withRadiation protection guidance Ability to provide safe and effective manual handling to patients, usingequipment as appropriately trained to do soPatient and client care To provide high quality care which complies with relevant local guidelines,National legislation, Professional Standards and NHS Employment To adhere to all Trust and Departmental policies and procedures to ensure a safeenvironment for patients, visitors and staff to maintain quality standards To develop and maintain appropriate competencies in order to assure safe andhigh quality practice during critical procedures Ensure competence in all areas of the Radiology Nursing role Policy and service development To participate in annual Individual Performance Review Maintain own competencies as required for the role To work at all times in accordance with the principles of best practice, withreference to all relevant national and local policies and guideline Will take part in the development, implementation and to continue updatingevidence based guidelines and policies Contribute to the development and delivery of education around procedures andaftercare to other teams Having a positive attitude to change and service improvement and contributing tothis across RadiologyFinance, equipment and other resources This post has no financial control Development of knowledge regarding budgetary control and appropriate use ofresources is requiredPeople management and training Supervises junior staff as well as student nurses, auxiliaries, radiology supportworkers and student radiographers Contributes towards education aimed at discharge teams and other Radiologystaff, providing procedure specific information Contributes towards the development of Radiology Support Worker staff,including undertaking personal development reviewsInformation technology and administrative duties Will be able to use the IT systems that are relevant to the role, this includes usingpathology systems to document patient results, pre-assessment systems,Radiology systems and Theatre systems Ensures accurate documentation of information as relevant to the task beingcarried outResearch and development Participate in procedure specific training enabling the team to provide the bestservice and to support best patient outcomes Help to develop and foster a learning a environment where feedback is welcome,valued and drives service improvement Ensure all relevant training is kept up to date, maintaining own knowledge andskills Seek help and support from other members of the team where neededFreedom to act Act with integrity and professionalism, ensuring you are demonstratingresponsible behaviour at all times Be accountable for actions and learn from mistakes, be honest and shareexperiences which in turn encourages learning in others Ensure high standards of care in accordance with agreed policies and procedures To administer medications inline with trust and NMC guidance Supporting the wider team during times of peak activity and absence Reporting of incidents via the Datix system where required To maintain active status on the NMC register Always act in accordance with the NMC code of conduct of professional practice
