An opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Clinical Research Nurse post within the Lung Unit working across our Sutton site. The role will provide opportunities and exposure to the whole clinical research portfolio working alongside experts in medical oncology and clinical research nursing. We are a highly regarded busy multidisciplinary team performing both clinical and research work and are seen as pioneers in managing lung cancer cancer treatment.

The successful applicant should have a flexible approach to their duties and the ability to work both as part of the team as well as independently. In addition excellent communication, administrative and IT skills and being supportive and open to new initiatives are particularly valued by the team.The successful candidate will be required to work cross site on a weekly basis, be a self directed practitioner and have the skills to motivate others.The portfolio includes both sponsored, commercial and non-commercial studies as well as translational studies with genetic components. Such diversity requires a dedicated team combining different backgrounds and expertise to provide not only high quality data and patient care, but also continued input into screening and identifying suitable patients from this tumour group. This post will provide continued support and care for patients who by the nature of their disease require close monitoring and continuity.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work under the supervision of the lead research nurse and senior research nurses within the research team and has a key role to play in the day-to-day running of clinical trials within the Trust. These trials may be related to anti-cancer treatment (e.g. chemotherapy, radiotherapy, biological therapy, gene therapy or surgery), symptom management or some other aspect of cancer care, such as screening. Central to the role are the recruitment, education and monitoring of patients entering a clinical trial. Working closely with the principal investigator and members of the multidisciplinary team, the postholder will support patients who choose to participate in clinical trials by providing advice and information and acting as the patients' advocate. An important aspect of the role is the maintenance of accurate and comprehensive records of data derived from the research studies. The post holder will be involved in ensuring that any research undertaken within the department safeguards the well being of the patients, and is conducted within ICH Good Clinical Practice Guidelines for Research.

2.1 To coordinate arrangements required for patients undergoing specialist investigations as part of the research protocol.

2.2 To assess the patient prior to trial treatment, monitor the patient receiving trial treatment and follow the patient up on completion of trial treatment as required by protocol.

2.3 To collect and accurately record data in accordance with requirements of the trial protocol.

2.4 To participate in the design and preparation of research protocols, patient information sheets and other documentation associated with clinical trials, ensuring that these are reviewed and updated as required.

2.5 To safeguard the integrity of the trial by ensuring compliance with ICH GCP guidelines.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • First level registration
  • Post registration oncology qualification or equivalent relevant qualification
  • Basic computer Literacy
  • Research methods education
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development


Desirable

  • Relevant diploma / degree
  • Competence in research orientated PC software (Access, Excel, SPSS)


Experience

Essential

  • Experience as a senior staff nurse or above working in a clinical research environment
  • Experience as a senior staff nurse in oncology nursing
  • Previous experience in clinical speciality of post applied for e.g. haematology, gynaecology, palliative care
  • Personal and Leadership Management experience


Desirable

  • Experience of co-ordinating IRAS submissions
