We are looking for a dynamic and motivated plaster room Technician to join our friendly and enthusiastic Trauma and orthopaedic team at the James Paget University Hospital.

The post holder will be required to ensure safe and effective delivery of care to Orthopaedic patients requiring application and removal of casts and appliances. To work in accordance with the principles laid down by the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and relevant Trust Policies.

Main duties of the job

  • The application and removal of all types of casts and splints, including specialist casting of paediatric patients, in the clinic, on the wards, in theatres and Emergency Department as required, maintaining at all times a high standard of patient care in accordance with the BOA.
  • Maintain a high standard of patient care applying evidence-based practice
  • Demonstrate competency and teach others in the safe and effective use of equipment in the clinical area
  • Offer professional advice to all areas requiring assistance in casting techniques, as required and updating knowledge of other Healthcare professionals.
  • Work in collaboration with all members of the MDT and both Orthopaedics wards, Theatres and Emergency Department to ensure all patient with casts, orthopaedic appliances, slings, splints and braces are cared safely and appropriately.
  • Advising patients and their carers on all aspects of caring for their casts/splints.
  • Dealing with telephone enquiries from patients/carers seeking advice regarding casts and splints.
  • Maintain accurate records of all care given.

Job responsibilities

  • Provide and Promote health education for the patient, their family and carers ensuring all information is relevant, evidence based and up to date.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information (written, verbal, and electronic).
  • Assisting medical staff with clinical procedures e.g. manipulation of fractures, corrective casting.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe working environment.
  • To participate in the management of stock rotation and replenishment.
  • Remain up to date professionally.
  • Promptly and effectively communicate relevant changes in patient status to MDT.
  • Ensure Trust policies are adhered to.
  • Safeguard the health and welfare of patients, visitors and staff in all circumstances including management of situations of violence or aggression.
  • To work flexibly to meet the needs of the service.
  • Adhere at all times to the Trusts policies and procedures

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • British Casting Certificate (formerly BOA/BOAN diploma in plastering techniques)
  • Degree in a healthcare science or relevant clinical equivalent experience


Desirable

  • Willingness to further develop knowledge and skills necessary for the role


Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Significant post qualification experience of working in a plaster room


Desirable

  • Experience of working in a team environment
  • Supervisory and teaching experience
  • Knowledge of casting materials and thermoplastics


Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to plan, prioritise and organise own workload and the plaster room service
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives and staff of all disciplines both in Clinic and other departments within the Trust
  • Computer literate with ability to use Microsoft Office, Word and Excel
  • To work on own initiative and manage own time to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to deal with difficult, sensitive and confidential situations
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and written
  • Be able to work flexibly to cover all aspects of the service
