We are an 18 bedded Oncology/Haematology Ward consisting of all side rooms. We care for acutely unwell patients receiving inpatient chemotherapy regimens, complications post chemo for example neutropenic sepsis, spinal cord compressions, hypercalcaemia, SVCO, immunotherapy related toxicities, symptom management and end of life care. Our Chemotherapy trained nurses also triage chemotherapy patients over the phone and accept direct admissions to the ward.

We are committed to the development of our team and have a clinical educator who has dedicated time for this additionally she runs learning bays which are a fantastic opportunity to work alongside our experienced clinical educator and learn about how to time manage, manage an acutely unwell patients and emergency situations.

Main duties of the job

The role involves caring for acutely unwell patients receiving inpatient chemotherapy regimens, complications post chemo for example neutropenic sepsis, spinal cord compressions, hypercalcaemia, SVCO, immunotherapy related toxicities, symptom management and end of life care as well as the administration of immunoglobulins and all blood products. The position offers an opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in the administration of IV therapies, blood products and chemotherapy. Once chemotherapy trained you will also triage chemotherapy patients over the phone and accept direct admissions to the ward. We have the AOS nurse based on the ward who is also there to offer support if needed.

Experience in looking after patients with the above conditions is not essential as we will offer support as necessary.

We will give you an overview of chemotherapy and its side effects and when ready you will complete your chemotherapy training.

We are also able to look at developing a clear career pathway to get you where you want to go, including progression pathways for those of you who want to develop your management skills.

When you start with us you will be given a significant induction programme - you will have four weeks supernumerary on Bostonian (formerly 7a) which can include a day with the AOS nurse to introduce you to haematological/oncological emergencies, time in the chemo suite to further your training and knowledge in this specific field, and insight visit to the hospice to give an insight into end of life and symptom control and a visit to our sister ward Waddington at Lincoln. If newly qualified you will also take part in the trust preceptorship programme.

You will be allocated a team lead, preceptor and a buddy. You will also receive bi monthly check ins with your team lead.
