This is a training role within the Adult Eating Disorders Service. This role is a 2-year fixed term appointment leading to a permanent CBT Therapist post at the end of this period if the postgraduate diploma programme is completed successfully. The post-holder will work within the service providing formal psychological interventions whilst undertaking a programme of training for this role. This intensive training post will equip the post-holder to provide a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) service to clients with a range of complex problems for which CBT is demonstrated to be clinically effective. The post-holder will work in the service for 4 days of the week using the newly developed skills whilst attending the training programme for the other day.

In the first year of the programme, the four days a week on placement will be split between the eating disorder service and an IAPT service. In the second year of the programme all four placement days will be based in the eating disorder service.

The post holder will work with people with different cultural backgrounds and ages, using interpreters when necessary and should be committed to equal opportunities.

Main duties of the job

1.1. Accept referrals via agreed protocols within the service.

1.2. Assess clients for suitability for CBT. Where the problems appear to be too complex or severe to be appropriate for a trainee therapist, to refer to manager/supervisor for advice on how to manage the case.

1.3. Make decisions on suitability of new referrals, adhering to the department's referral protocols, and refer unsuitable clients on to the relevant service or back to the referral agent as necessary.

1.4. Formulate, implement and evaluate therapy programmes for clients.

1.5. Educate and involve family members and others in treatment as necessary, conveying CBT formulations with sensitivity in easily understood language.

1.6. Adhere to an agreed activity contract relating to the number of client contacts offered, and clinical sessions carried out per week in order to minimise waiting times and ensure treatment delivery remains accessible and convenient.

1.7. Attend multi-disciplinary meetings relating to referrals or clients in treatment, where appropriate.

1.8. Complete all requirements relating to data collection within the service.

1.9. Keep coherent records of all clinical activity in line with service protocols

1.10.Work closely with other members of the team ensuring appropriate step-up and stepdown arrangements are in place to maintain a stepped care approach.

1.11. Assess and integrate issues surrounding occupation and employment into the overall therapy process

About us

The Eating Disorders Service (EDS), based at St Ann's Hospital in Haringey and is part of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust. It is a substantial, well-established facility with a regional catchment area that offers a specialist service to adults (17.5 years upwards) with a primary Eating Disorder. The EDS provides a service for the three local boroughs of Haringey, Barnet and Enfield as well Camden, Islington, Tower Hamlets, City & Hackney and Newham, which comprises a population of five and a half million.

The multidisciplinary EDS offers a comprehensive range of therapeutic interventions including intensive inpatient care, a day programme, community liaison work, and outpatient services. The Psychological Therapies Team, a significant part of the EDS, includes qualified Clinical and Counselling Psychologists, Cognitive Behavioural Therapists, Assistant Psychologists, a Family Therapist, a Research Assistant and an Art Therapist. We also regularly have trainee Clinical and Counselling Psychologists on placement within our team. Managerial and professional accountability are to a Principal Psychologist who, in turn, reports managerially to the Service Lead of the EDS.

Qualifications

Essential

  • A recorded/registered qualification in one of the following at graduate level in mental health or learning disability nursing, social work, counselling (accredited level), occupational therapy, arts therapy, medicine (psychiatry / general practice), psychological therapy (UKCP registered), Psychology (clinical, counselling, forensic or health). Please see the BABCP website for more detail of accepted qualifications. OR Evidence of meeting the Knowledge Skills and Attitude (KSA) requirements of BABCP


Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience of working in mental health services


Desirable

  • Experience of working with people with eating disorders


Training

Essential

  • Able to attend 70-80 days training over a 2-year course. Including a day per week, and 5-day intensive teaching blocks. This may involve significant travel and overnight stays to attend university.
