An opportunity has risen within St Mark's Hospital Stoma and Pouch Care department. We are looking for a highly motivated Registered nurse with at least 2 years of colorectal and GI nursing experience to join our team of clinical nurse specialists based at Central Middlesex Hospital.
The stoma care department at St Mark's Hospital is one of the largest teams in the UK for stoma and fistula management. As a tertiary referral centre we create significant number of new stomas and ileoanal pouches per annum. We also offer long-term support to community patients in the local boroughs of Harrow, Ealing and Brent.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide long term management and support to patients with a stoma or fistula, and also support the pouch nurse specialists within the team. You will work cross-site Central Middlesex and Northwick Park Hospital sites.
This specific care will be provided through comprehensive clinical skills, information, advice and support to patients undergoing pouch/ stoma forming surgery in addition to the continued development and management of Nurse Led Clinics and the telephone and email advice lines.

Job description
Job responsibilities
- Apply advanced clinical history taking skills to be able to receive, analyse and interpret highly complex medical and surgical information in order to formulate a plan of care for a patient with a stoma or enterocutaneous fistula within inpatient and outpatient services or referrals from the designated stoma care advice line.
- Demonstrate highly developed interpersonal skills to be able to communicate with all members of the multi professional healthcare team within the Trust as well as regionally and nationally in order to achieve a coordinated specialist service for patients. This will involve communicating specialist and highly complex or sensitive information verbally, formally written and electronically as appropriate.
- Utilise expert communication skills to disseminate and simplify highly complex surgical information, using appropriate information aids as necessary, in order to facilitate the patients understanding and inform the patient of their surgical options so the patient can give informed consent. Discuss results of investigations and ongoing care
- Utilise advanced communication skills to identify patients at risk of clinical deterioration in medical condition from telephone communication. To receive, analyse and interpret highly complex medical and surgical information and to formulate a plan of care or to make appropriate referrals i.e referral to Consultant Surgeon. This will avoid unnecessary appointments in the Out Patient Department.
- To deliver individualised care and psychological support to patients and families incorporating their diverse cultures, ethnic backgrounds and any disabilities they may have.
- To ensure accurate records of patient care are maintained i.e. patient notes and referral letters and that relevant clinical information is transferred onto the departments database.
- To be skilled at making presentations using multimedia tools at local meetings to all members of the multi professional team in order to share best practice.
- To liaise with home delivery and product companies the services and equipment required by patients.
