An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Infant Feeding Team to appoint a Band 6 Specialist Infant Feeding Midwife to support the Specialist Infant Feeding Coordinator and Infant Feeding Team. You will provide support to develop and implement infant feeding policies and practice within the Trust, in-line with UNICEF requirements and to meet national and local breastfeeding targets and help to address health inequalities.

You should be passionate and have experience in breastfeeding practice and management. You will work as part of team dedicated to improving breastfeeding initiation and continuation rates, supporting Trust staff to develop their knowledge and ensuring that babies receive continuous good feeding support in both the Acute and community settings.

Main duties of the job

As the successful candidate for this position, you will have an important role working within the Infant Feeding Team to support the development and strategic development of infant feeding initiatives both nationally and locally. Influencing infant feeding practice both within the hospital and community environments.

You will provide expert clinical care and offer infant feeding support in complex situations with families and colleagues. Referring as necessary to community partnerships and other disciplines.

You will support the Infant Feeding Coordinator with the maintenance and development of the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) across maternity and neonatal services and the wider Trust. Reflecting the philosophy of BFI throughout midwifery care and local maternity policies. Providing support to regularly Audit staff and mothers and ensuring we meet the recommendations to maintain our BFI accreditation.

You will support the Infant Feeding Frenulotomy Service. Undertake training if necessary to be able to review and divide restricted lingual frenulum in a clinical setting. Providing families with the relevant information to support them to make decisions about feeding and the care pathway their baby is receiving.

Qualifications/training and professional development

Essential

  • Registered Midwife
  • A degree or higher degree in Midwifery or related subject or equivalent experience
  • Mentorship preparation or equivalent


Desirable

  • International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants IBCLC
  • Competent in lingual frenulotomy and tongue-tie management / prepared to undertake training


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of participation in clinical audit
  • Computer literate, including use and management of databases
  • Practices a woman centred approach to care provision
  • Good experience providing infant feeding support in day-to-day role


Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to work autonomously and within a team
  • Ability to identify risks and appropriately escalate them
  • Ability to develop midwifery practice and promote excellence in clinical practice
  • Ability to demonstrate evidence based practice


Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of national and local maternity initiatives influencing service provision
  • Understanding of the NHS governance agenda / standards for Better Health
  • Evidence of awareness of current Safeguarding protocols to level 3
  • Knowledge of statutory regulations governing midwifery
  • Strong knowledge of National Safeguarding children policies
  • Presentation skills
