This post is for a 0.5 WTE specialty grade psychiatrist working in Camden and UCLH antenatal services. The post is available from 1 September 2024 and is for a fixed-term contract until 6 August 2025. The post holder will be working alongside two substantive consultants and will receive supervision from one of the consultants. The post has come about as a result of a gap in provision of a specialty trainee.

The post-holder will have clinical responsibility for patients referred to the service and will also work closely with multiple agencies within the integrated clinical service model. The SPMHS works closely with maternity services, adult community mental health teams, mental health liaison teams, crisis resolution teams/home treatment teams, adult psychological services, primary care and other community services and organisations.

Main duties of the job

o Appropriate flexibility within timetabled working hours is anticipated for urgent clinical matters.o To carry out mental health assessments and reviews and domiciliary assessments as required.o To provide second opinions for perinatal colleagues if requested.o To provide medication reviews for perinatal colleagues if requested.o To support clinical governance projects, particularly QI and audits within the service.o To attend and participate in MDT meetings to keep informed of service issues and developments.o To keep up with administration, including clinic letters, entering Dialog + care plans and reviews and risk assessments on the electronic patient record system.o To assist with serious incident investigations and complaints if requested.o To keep up to date with mandatory training.

Job responsibilities

This is an exciting role where the post holder will provide psychiatric input to the integrated SPMHS. The post holder will be supported by the multidisciplinary team.

Perinatal psychiatrists have expertise in the prevention, assessment and management of mental disorders occurring or co-existing with pregnancy or the postpartum period, including the assessment and facilitation of the mother-infant relationship in the context of maternal mental illness.

The post holder will clinically cover Camden-based women booked to deliver at UCLH and other local maternity units.

The provision of preconception advice for women with severe mental illness from Camden will also be provided.

The service works in partnership with maternity services and has well established joint multiagency network meetings with social care and maternity services at the hospitals. The post holder will be a GMC registered clinician responsible for patients allocated to them and will assess, manage, plan and deliver care, including being professionally and legally accountable. All patients on the caseload fall under one of the two consultants.

The post holder will work cohesively to support and advise MDT colleagues whilst also working autonomously and innovatively. They will supervise junior colleagues. They will have a commitment to collaborative working and actively supporting and liaising with other health and social care professionals and agencies.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications/Registration

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 6 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training in General Adult Psychiatry
  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry
  • Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing


Desirable

  • Other relevant post-graduate qualification
  • Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician
  • Training up to date to be an approved trainer/clinical supervisor in line with GMC recognition and approval of trainers which is overseen by the LETB
  • Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training
  • Training as a Consultant mentor


Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice.
  • Clinical knowledge of the full range mental disorders including those which occur in the Perinatal period.
  • Ability to assess and treat perinatal psychiatric problems. and to deal with crisis situations
  • Ability to advise on the use of psychotropic medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Interest and commitment in perinatal psychiatry
  • Experience in the assessment and treatment of complex clinical cases involving severe and enduring mental illness and significant risk histories and the ability to assertively engage and manage such cases.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and safeguarding practices
  • Experience in work place based assessments of doctors in training
  • Knowledge of clinical commissioning and external organisations that interface with an NHS Trust.
  • Experience in developing policies and protocols.
  • Good understanding of Trust governance structures, especially clinical governance
  • An understanding of the role of research within the wider service

Essential

  • Ability to practise as an independent psychiatrist.
  • Thoroughness and attention to detail in clinical matters
  • Sensitivity to needs of all patients and carers.
  • Sensitivity and awareness in clients and staff from different cultures, ethnicities, gender and sexual orientations.
  • Teaching and supervision skills for undergraduate medical students, doctors in training and multi-professional staff
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multidisciplinary basis with all levels of staff.
  • Ability to take on the role and responsibilities of the clinical lead
  • A special interest or willingness to develop one in an area which helps to meet the needs of the Trust
  • Experience in undertaking clinical audit, investigating serious incidents and handling complaints
  • Enthusiasm for the subject of perinatal psychiatry and willingness to share knowledge and experience
