The Pharmacy Clinical Trials service at University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) is a key part of the clinical research multi-disciplinary team which aims to provide a safe and efficient service in the conduct of Investigational Medicinal Product (IMP) studies across UHL's three sites. The Pharmacy Clinical Trials service is a friendly, varied and busy service with a portfolio of over 200 IMP studies.

UHL is one of the largest and busiest teaching Trusts in the country and provides care to over one million people in Leicestershire and Rutland. Leicester is a vibrant city with excellent transport links.

We are looking are looking for a dynamic, forward thinking pharmacist to develop their clinical trial knowledge in a wide range of cancer treatments.

Your main base will be Leicester Royal Infirmary but the successful candidate will be expected to support and manage the Clinical Trial Team and deputise where necessary across three sites.

Main duties of the job

You should have previous experience of working in a hospital pharmacy and previous experience in oncology and haematology will be essential. Clinical trials experience is desirable but not essential.

You will work closely with the team of pharmacy co-ordinators, technician, assistants as well as the Clinical Management Group. The post holder's main role will work closely with HOPE unit research staff, as well as Pharmacy colleagues, in the set up and running of both commercial and non-commercial studies and the local Research & Innovation Department to ensure comprehensive trials support. The post holder will also be involved in the building of clinical trials protocols on the existing electronic prescribing system and in the set-up of clinical trials on a day to day basis

We require a person to work independently with a high level attention to detail, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as effective influencing and negotiating skills.

Job responsibilities

  • To carry out clinical and feasibility reviews of Clinical Trial protocols involving IMPs.
  • To be responsible for negotiation with Sponsors & Investigators with regard to facilities, resources, capacity planning and financial arrangements in the operational management of those clinical trials for which the post holder has responsibility.
  • To act as the professional lead for all aspects of pharmaceutical input in accordance with legal requirements and Good Clinical Practice relating to prescribing, administration, storage and disposal of IMPs for those clinical trials for which the post holder has responsibility
  • To professionally check, dispense and final accuracy check clinical trial prescriptions in accordance with departmental and Trust standards, in conjunction with UHL clinical governance objectives and those of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) and in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and the Clinical Trial Regulations.
  • To line manage pharmacy clinical trial personnel as appropriate, setting objectives and personal development plans and regularly reviewing their progress against these.

As part of this job, you will be expected to work as part of the wider pharmacy team and contribute to evenings, weekends and on-call shifts as appropriate.

Person Specification

Training and Qualification

Essential

  • Mpharm or equivalent degree
  • Registered as a practising Pharmacist with the GPhc
  • Postgraduate clinical qualification or equivalent clinical experience or equivalent level of knowledge gained through extensive experience


Experience

Essential

  • Experience in Oncology/Haematology
  • Post-registration experience in hospital pharmacy
  • Experience of setting objectives and managing performance of individuals and services


Communication and relationship skills

Essential

  • Experience of leading a small team
  • Able to work alone and as part of a team


Planning and organisation skills

Essential

  • Understand the principles of service development and management of change and have some experience of implementing them
  • Good planning, organisation and time management skills
