The Mental Health Nurse (RMN/RNLD) is a key member of the multidisciplinary care team and will be responsible for assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating care, communicating findings, influencing change and promoting health and best practices, patient safety and experience.

The post holder will be professionally accountable to the Executive Director of Nursing, and operationally accountable to the Matron / Clinical Service Manager.

Main duties of the job

  • Act as, or train to become, a Practice Assessor. Support student nurses' learning and development through assessment and feedback.
  • Comply with NMC registration, revalidation, and Code of Conduct standards.
  • Support the implementation of nursing strategies and adhere to KMPT policies and values.
  • Identify, report, and respond to safeguarding concerns.
  • Prioritize patient safety through safe practice, risk management, and incident reporting.
  • Provide holistic care, including education, medication management, and support for patients and their carers.
  • Supervise staff, manage workloads, and undertake specific clinical responsibilities as required.

Person Specification

Training, Qualifications and Registration

Essential

  • RMN or RNLD.
  • Qualified Practice Assessor (or working towards becoming a Practice Assessor if still in first year of registration)


Desirable

  • Evidence of training/further study/or prepared to within the addiction specialty


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of Mental Health/Learning Disabilities settings and or working with people with Mental Health/Learning Disabilities conditions.


Desirable

  • Previous experience of working within the NHS.
  • Experience of Psychotherapies, counselling, group facilitation or motivational interviewing


Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Basic knowledge of and ability to apply relevant legislative frameworks and policies relating to care, e.g. Mental Capacity Act
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NMC Code of Conduct
  • Basic understanding in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care
  • To pass medication and physical health competencies
  • A basic understanding and ability to apply principles of risk assessment and risk management.
  • Basic awareness of clinical governance and its relationship to clinical effectiveness and patient safety and patient experience.
  • Effective organisational /planning and decision making skills.
  • Good knowledge and practice of IT skills.
  • Basic leadership skills e.g. taking charge, delegation of duties, supervising others.
  • To participate in Quality Improvement, Audits, Research, etc.
