We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic and supportive pharmacist (Band 8B) to lead the Specialist Pharmacy Services (SPS) Medicines Advice (MA) London service. This post is hosted by London North West Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH) and based at Northwick Park Hospital (NPH) and Guy's Hospital (GH) with opportunity to work remotely.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership: Manage the day-to-day operations and delivery of the SPS MA clinical enquiry answering service (CEAS).
  • Team Management: Line manage staff involved in the CEAS at both NPH and GH.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Associate MA Professional Lead to ensure the safe, efficient, cost-effective, and patient-centred development and delivery of the SPS MA service.
  • Innovation: Be innovative and motivational in delivering the evolving SPS MA CEAS while collaborating with colleagues across multiple sites, including the local Medicines Information team at LNWH and GSTT.

NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service (SPS) supports the NHS in developing best practice systems related to buying, making, and using medicines.

Our Medicines Advice (MA) team focuses on supporting medicines optimisation and patient care through our clinical enquiry answering service (CEAS), written materials on our website, podcasts, and by supporting the NHS England Medicines Optimisation Delivery Group.

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will:
    • Support the provision of the NHS SPS MA Service consistently and equitably across England, aligned with NHSEI commissioning expectations.
    • Develop and implement qualitative and quantitative measures to determine performance against the organisational strategy.
    • Directly manage, undertake individual appraisals, and agree on objectives.
    • Work in a multi-disciplinary way across multiple organisational and professional boundaries.
    • Be accountable for your actions and those of any staff you line manage.
    • Act independently and consistently with the values of the NHS SPS.
    • Deputise for the SPS MA Associate Professional Lead at key meetings and forums where a presence from the MA function is necessary.

Person Specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential

  • Pharmacist (Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council)
  • Post-graduate diploma in clinical pharmacy or other relevant field, e.g. management, or equivalent experience of working in specialist area


Desirable

  • Post-graduate qualification, i.e. MSc, in clinical pharmacy, or equivalent experience


Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a complex matrix type working environment within a diffuse national organisation.
  • Some experience of working with medicines commissioning and decision-making structures within the NHS to influence change.


Desirable

  • An understanding of financial management.
  • Existing knowledge of the Specialist Pharmacy Service (SPS) and its development and role in delivery of Medicines Optimisation.
