Band 5 or Band 6 Biomedical scientist in cellular pathology.
The Histopathology Department is a nationally recognized laboratory in the field of orthopaedic pathology, providing a specialised orthopaedic and musculoskeletal histopathology service, including provision of a primary bone and soft tissue sarcoma diagnostic service and a diagnostic muscle biopsy service. Over 2000 surgical examinations are carried out each year
We are looking to recruit to our small team of Specialist BMS's.
We have a Band 6 opportunity, and are seeking a qualified HCPC registered Biomedical scientist who holds a specialist portfolio in cellular pathology gained through the necessary years of experience within a cellular pathology laboratory and has competency within dissection and immunohistochemistry
We would also be in a position to consider candidates who do not hold a specialist portfolio in cellular pathology to be appointed to a Band 5 job description (with reduced responsibilities and experience requirements). This role would give opportunity to gain experience in this specialist area of pathology with potential for regrading of the role in the future on achievement of the specialist portfolio required.

To assist in the undertaking of
Dissecting all surgical specimens Selecting the areas of tissue to sample to be used as the basis of histopathology reports Selecting and freezing representative normal and tumour tissue for the tissue bank store Create the macro descriptions of the samples used in departmental reportsDevelop skills and experience in dissection and examination of bone and soft tissue surgical specimens. Ensure all specimens for decalcification are monitored regularly and processed as soon as possible
To perform in routine and specialist analytical work to a high standard including:
Tissue embedding Microtomy Special stains Cutting frozen sections Immunohistochemistry and Quality assurance
To ensure that each investigation is performed in accordance with the appropriate standard operating procedure (SOP)
To participate in receiving specimens into the department and recording them on the computer system.
Supervise and train staff to achieve the best utilisation of resources maintaining an effective service.
To participate in the evaluation of new techniques, equipment and protocols.
To ensure that there are sufficient stocks of control material, reagents and consumables at all times within the laboratory.
Filing and retrieving histological material frozen material, slides and blocks.
Active involvement in the process of continuous quality improvement through audit, preventative and corrective action throughout the laboratory.
To follow departmental maintenance protocols for laboratory equipment and take appropriate corrective action when required.
To write and review SOPs using the document control system.
To undertake audit activities.
To participate in Staff Performance Appraisal and agreed Personal Development Plan.
To adhere to Trust policies and procedures relevant to the position.
The post holder will be expected to carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade and in line with the requirement of this post.
To participate in any mandatory training organised by RNOH or other courses relevant to the position.
To forward their professional education with relevant external training and courses
