The Nutrition and Dietetics Service at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust is excited to recruit a to a nutrition nurse to work within our community services
The service aims are to identify patients with significant nutritional problems, in particular those who need specific enteral or feeding support, working closely with the relevant MDTs and service users to support decision making in relation to the placement of feeding devices ensuring a high quality seamless service to these patients.

The service aims are to identify patients with significant nutritional problems, in particular those who need specific enteral or feeding support, working closely with the relevant MDTs and service users to support decision making in relation to the placement of feeding devices ensuring a high quality seamless service to these patients.
- A typical day may include assessing service users for enteral feeding supporting patients/carers and community staff with the placement, management or troubleshooting of enteral feeding devices amongst a varied caseload. Also providing training to patients relatives carers community staff AHPs and support staff on the best practice management to ensure compliance with feeding devices.
Main duties of the job
- In collaboration with the multidisciplinary team provide guidance, advice, support and counselling throughout the patient pathway, referring to other professionals, such as Speech and Language Therapy, as appropriate.
- To deliver individualised nursing care related to nutrition and enteral feeding tubes, based upon principles of best practice.
- To undertake comprehensive assessment of patients clinical needs in a holistic manner using specialised clinical knowledge and skills, working in multidisciplinary teams within the community and local
- To liaise with acute unit Nutrition Nurses, Hospital and Community Dietitians, GP's, District Nurses, Intermediate Care staff, Nursing Homes and home enteral feeding companies and any other stakeholders to facilitate the smooth discharge of patients being tube fed.
- To prevent hospital admission of patients with enteral feeding tubes by responding urgently when they or their carers are unable to administer any feed, fluid or medication.
- To work with the team to plan and organise workload, continually prioritising the needs of urgent work between routine patients.To act as a patient/staff advocate through the application of ethical, legal and professional knowledge and skills in relation to nutritional nursing care.
- Assist in clinically educating and evaluating the clinical competence of junior staff, providing support and guidance.
- Maintain and develop specialist knowledge of evidenced based practice.

- Degree level or evidence of working towards
- Teaching or assessing qualification - SLAIP
- Leadership course (In-house would be acceptable)
- Evidence of structured self-study or professional development in a nutrition related subject.
Experience

- Post registration experience of caring for patients receiving nutritional support via varied enteral feeding tubes
- Experience at working with patients with a range of medical conditions
- Able to demonstrate commitment to high quality patient care
- Evidence of practical experience in caring for patients receiving artificial nutritional support
