The Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) is one of the country's leading cancer treatment facilities located in 2 purpose built centres at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle and the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, providing radiotherapy services primarily to the population of the North East and Cumbria.

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated Therapeutic Radiographer ready to take the next step in their career and work within our large, aspirational radiotherapy service.

This post is based at the radiotherapy department at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle which is equipped with 2 matched Varian TrueBeam Linacs, a Siemens Go Open Pro CT scanner and access to a Siemens MRI for planning purposes. All patients are treated using daily IGRT and we will be installing a SGRT system later this year. The postholder will be working as part of a small team delivering high quality radiotherapy to adult patients including lung and prostate SABR.

Main duties of the job

  • The postholder must have specialist, extensive knowledge in the delivery of radiotherapy across a broad range of techniques and complexity and of developments within this field including VMAT, IGRT, SGRT and SABR preferably gained from working in a large, modern radiotherapy service.
  • They should have good knowledge of IR(ME)R and IRR legislation and work within policies and procedures to be able to image and deliver radiotherapy treatments accurately and safely.
  • The postholder will be responsible for the organisation and management of the workload within their specified clinical work area. They will participate in student and staff training.
  • The post holder will be required to have a flexible approach to working hours to accommodate service demands. There may be occasional requirement to travel to Newcastle for training purposes.

Job responsibilities

  • Responsible for the day to day management of the team and clinical workload within the specified clinical area, ensuring the highest quality of technical practice and patient care.
  • Accountable for the direct delivery of radiotherapy within the specified clinical area.
  • To implement and deliver complex radiotherapy procedures including localisation, imaging, dose calculation and treatment delivery.
  • To undertake radiotherapy practice independently and professionally in accordance with all protocols and procedures, and with care and accuracy.
  • To ensure workload targets are achieved with optimal use of resources.
  • To participate in and ensure staff & student training/development takes place.
  • Contribute to holistic patient care as part of a multi-disciplinary team, providing specialist advice and information regarding radiotherapy to patients and their carers.

Person Specification

Knowledge

Essential

  • Up to date & in depth knowledge of modern radiotherapy equipment and systems appropriate to their area of work
  • Knowledge of quality assurance, health & safety and other relevant legislation in radiotherapy
  • Knowledge of future developments in radiotherapy/imaging


Desirable

  • Current or past participation in some type of research or project work
  • Detailed knowledge of the application of RT techniques

Experience

  • Participation in National activities/meetings


Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree or equivalent in Therapy Radiography
  • State Registered Therapy Radiographer
  • Evidence of continuing professional & personal development

  • Relevant postgraduate or other qualification
  • Commitment to further study
