The post holder will practice within a team of nursing staff and act as a 'named nurse' for a group of patients: assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating their care needs. They will be expected to work closely with the multidisciplinary team , co-ordinate a ward area and to provide direct supervision to junior staff and students.

They will take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of senior sister or as delegated by the matron.

Main duties of the job

-To promote Family Integrated Care and ensure the provision of a welcoming, caring and safe environment for babies and their families.

-To be a highly competent, and visible practitioner within the speciality and demonstrate clinical expertise in the care of all patients receiving treatment on the unit.

-To deliver a high standard of nursing care that is evidence based.

-To liaise appropriately with all members of the multidisciplinary team in a manner that promotes effective teamwork.

-To support and facilitate junior staff in their development, contributing to the learning environment by participating in unit teaching programmes.

-To assist in ensuring the safety of the unit, actively participating in clinical audit, clinical risk and quality issues, including reporting of critical incidents.

-To liaise with the MDT regarding discharge and follow-up and to facilitate the discharge of babies into the community with support to the family at home.

- To maintain effective links with the maternity unit, paediatric department, the multidisciplinary team and the neonatal network.

Person Specification

Essential and desirable

Essential

  • RN/RSCN/RM
  • Neonatal Intensive Care/ENB 405 or equivalent
  • Teaching and Assessing qualification ENB 998 course or equivalent


Desirable

  • Current NLS certificate
  • Leadership course/qualification or experience
  • Diploma/Degree in Nursing


Essential and Desirable

Essential

  • Commitment to Neonatal Nursing and professional development of nurses
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Able to work under pressure and support and reassure parents/carers


Desirable

  • Experience of audit and research
  • Ability to lead and influence change/ experience in a leadership role
  • Computer literacy
