We are looking for a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist. The post comprises 0.4 WTE as part of the Complex Trauma Service in the borough and as part of the Trauma Informed Care project in the Transformation of Mental Health Services in the Communities we serve.

Experience of working with complex mental health problems in NHS settings is essential. The job offers a great opportunity to further your skills; as well as regular supervision, there are forums for support and professional development. The post holder will also be actively involved in consultation, teaching and training. The therapist will monitor and evaluate treatment offered to service users.

Main duties of the job

Secondary Care Psychological Services in Newham delivers a comprehensive NHS Psychotherapy Service for people presenting with severe and complex mental health problems. We provide a high quality clinical service, where flexible and complex interventions are available across a range of therapy models and modalities, which are accessed via health professionals in the community. The service delivery is informed by attention to the social, cultural, economic and political context of psychological problems to ensure that the service meets the needs of the Boroughs diverse population.

The services offer a variety of psychotherapeutic approaches including cognitive-behavioural, integrative, systemic and psychodynamic psychotherapies, and a range of groups across the modalities. It acts as a specialist resource to primary and secondary care mental health services, and contributes significantly to community services. The service offers supervision and consultation to mental health professionals and runs a placement programme for trainee psychologists, counsellors and psychotherapists.

Person Specification Education/ Qualification/ Training Essential
  • Postgraduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (as accredited by the BPS).OR Postgraduate Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. Registered with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist.
  • Formal qualification in another model of psychotherapy
  • Formal basic training in teaching, lecturing or clinical supervision.
  • Training in evidence-based psychological treatments for complex PTSD including EMDR, Narrative Exposure Therapy and Trauma Focused CBT Training in structural/ tertiary dissociation and/or parts work
Experience Essential
  • Significant experience working with a wide range of psychological problems within therapy in NHS secondary care.
  • Experience working within a diverse cultural setting and engaging patients with different language and cultural needs.
  • Experience of developing and delivering therapeutic interventions in various formats, including individual and group.
  • Experience delivering therapy through an interpreter.
  • Experience of the application of psychology in different cultural contexts.
  • Experience of working with patients from moderate to complex mental health conditions in number of settings.
  • Experience of developing and delivering specialist training programmes
  • Experience of working with service users with high levels of dissociation and/or DID presentations.
Skills Essential
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management, including the use of theoretical models to analyse information and to develop formulations upon which to base choice of treatment with particular reference to Adult Mental Health.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in relation to psychological trauma presentation, including complex PTSD.
  • Skills in the effective communication of technical and/or clinically sensitive information, such as comprehensive and coherent letters, reports and associated documentation. Skills in working in multidisciplinary settings.
  • Skills in providing advice and consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
  • Working knowledge of the practices and approaches of other key disciplines, professions and agencies involved in the care and management network, including medical, employment, social, educational and criminal justice systems.
