The Birches Respite Team are part of the Children and Young People's Community Nursing service. A vacancy has arisen within the Respite Team for an experienced paediatric nurse. This role offers a valuable opportunity to be part of an innovative service, develop your professional expertise and make a difference where it matters.

We are looking for someone with extensive experience in caring for children with complex health needs and in particular long-term ventilation. Community experience is desirable but not essential. Experience working in ITU or a high dependency unit would be valuable. Good communication skills are essential. Problem solving, ability to work independently as well as working as part of a large and diverse team are all characteristics we are looking for in applicants.

The successful candidate will be supported in the role by a clinical lead for continuing care, a clinical education team and clinical nurse specialists as well as the operational management team. You will benefit from ongoing professional development and support via clinical and managerial supervision.

The post will primarily involve supporting children who meet continuing care criteria and require support at home, in school and respite settings because they are long term ventilated or have complex physical health needs. As caseload manager for these children you will provide a holistic approach to their care in the community manage their discharge from hospital including the training of the staff working with the child and family. Skills in risk assessment, careplanning and managing equipment and resources are essential.

In addition to clinical practice the post holder will act as caseload manager for a designated caseload as well as mentoring and supporting more junior members of the team and students.

Currently the Team will also require the post to support the residential unit so the willingness to work a 24 hours shift pattern is essential.

You will demonstrate first level qualification of Child Branch or RGN with an RSCN qualification. ENB 998 or equivalent teaching qualification essential. We will consider candidates who have a learning disability qualification if they can demonstrate extensive experience working with children with complex health needs including ventilation.

  • Car owner/driver, or suitable alternative transport to enable you to undertake the job - and be prepared to be insured for business use. (It is unlikely that public transport will meet this requirement). If necessary, adjustments can be considered in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act.
Qualifications/ experience Essential
  • Registered Children Nurse or LD nurse with significant experience working with children with complex health needs
  • Experience working with Children with long term ventilation needs
  • Experience of managing / supporting staff
  • Demonstate a wide range of relevant clinical skills
Desirable
  • Teaching qualification or proven experience
  • Experience working in community setting
  • Nursing degree
