This post is eligible for a Golden Hello payment of �2,750 for new starters who are external to the Trust. This is payable in 3 instalments over a 2 year period. This payment is only eligible to new starters who do not already hold a contract of employment with the Trust. This post also includes paid enhancements for unsocial hours working during night, weekends and bank holidays.

Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Mental Health Nurse to join the Healthcare team at HMP Nottingham.

Working within the Team at HMP Nottingham will give you the opportunity to make a real difference to a group of people with a wide range of mental health issues, including complex and enduring mental health problems, some being managed under the Care Programme Approach (CPA).

This role is for registered nurses, with NMC registration, who wish to pursue a career within Offender Health, with proven post registration experience in supporting patients with primary and/or secondary Mental Health needs and have a good knowledge and understanding of CPA and risk assessment.

You should be enthusiastic, motivated, patient focused and enjoy a challenge.

HMP Nottingham

HMP Nottingham is a Category B remand Prison that houses approximately 1000 men over the age of 18.

There is a dedicated healthcare centre located within the establishment where healthcare appointments can be carried out.

Main Duties of the job

You will be a registered nurse with demonstrable experience in mental health and associated professional development.Working with men from arrival in the prison through to their release back into the community, you will feel rewarded in your ability to deliver a bespoke package of care to address and improve health inequalities to individuals with diverse and complex health needs?

Delivering a wide range of positive health opportunities to individuals in custody, which is equal to and often above what is offered in the community.

Offender Health Directorate

The Offender Health Directorate is one of the largest and most successful providers of prison healthcare in the UK.

The Directorate provide physical, mental health and substance misuse healthcare services in prisons across the East Midlands, Lincolnshire & Leicestershire.

Providing healthcare to several Prisons, for a population of over 10 000. You would be part of a large peer group of 400+ healthcare professionals, with access to peer support, supervision and excellent opportunities for learning and development.

We are committed to working in partnership with prison services, national probation service other healthcare providers and our criminal justice system partners to improve health, support justice to reduce re-offending behaviour.

The Offender Health Team truly believes it can make a difference to the lives of offenders by offering consistent, high-quality care in primary, mental health and substance misuse services that are equivalent to health services delivered outside of Prison.

Its the variety of this role which will provide a stimulating experience like no other, one minute you could be engaging patients in a mental health assessment or delivering brief therapeutic interventions with patients who have primary or secondary mental health problems, the next you may be facilitating a CPA review or contributing to a risk management meeting due to an individuals self-harm behaviour.

We work as part of a wide MDT, including GPs, Psychiatrists, Psychologists, RMNs, Pharmacists, Substance Misuse Recovery workers, RGNs, Sexual Health Specialists and other Allied Professionals and have strong links with community services to promote continuity of care.

We have well-established and strong relationships with the prison team, who support us to deliver healthcare safely.

This role enables you to work autonomously, whilst always having the support of a strong team when required. There are opportunities and support for progression for the right candidate, which can be anything from completing a full Preceptorship to a masters degree.

As a senior nurse your will also be responsible for supporting and supervising junior staff, to engage in individual and group supervision and reflective practice.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered RMN
  • NMC registered


Desirable

  • Post registration qualification
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Mentor and Assessor Experience


Experience

Essential

  • A genuine interest in working with this client group and in Offender Mental health related issues
  • Experience of working in secondary Mental Health Services
  • Effective case management/care planning skills
  • Supervision and appraisal of staff
  • Experience of working effectively within a MDT/interagency working


Desirable

  • Forensic and/ or prison/or criminal justice nursing experience


Knowledge

Essential

  • CPA systems and processes
  • An understanding of Personality Disorders
  • Able to offer support in a crisis situation and have experience of working with patients who self-harm.


Desirable

  • Knowledge and or experience of the ACCT process.
  • Local and National strategies including issues relevant to the criminal justice system


Skills

Essential

  • Good communicator with both verbal and written text.
  • Organisational skills to manage and prioritise own work load
  • IT skills including Patient Administration Systems (S1)
  • Evidence of effective and appropriate documentation


Desirable

  • Ability to engage with and develop a rapport with the client group
  • Evidence of working as part of a multi disciplinary team
  • Effective problem and decision solving skills
