A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust due to the expansion of our service. As a result of the opening of Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust are seeking staff to continue to support the Trust's journey to be a leading provider of care for our community.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be required to assess and treat patients being dealt with within medical wards, including those with multiple pathologies and complex medical and social issues.

You will need to possess a general knowledge of Acute Medicine, including Frailty and Dementia, have experience across several different clinical settings, adopt a flexible approach to harness excellent team working, organisational and time management skills.

You will be required to ensure that patients return home or transfer to intermediate care services at their optimum/to optimise their level of functioning. You will be expected to have skills to participate as a key member of the Multi-disciplinary Team ensuring a safe and timely transfer of patients into appropriate community setting.

You will be expected to show a keen interest in service development as well as being expected to participate in the supervision, teaching and appraisal of junior and student Therapies staffing as well as contributing to the in-service training programme for the specialty and to deliver clinical support and education to professional undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to 7 day working.

Job responsibilities

The Walsall Healthcare Therapy Teams are made up of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Support Staff working across Medicine and Critical Care. We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated, innovative Occupational Therapist who is driven to implement change and service development whilst expanding their own and others knowledge and skills across the service. You will need a flexible approach, including excellent team working, organisational and time management skills.
  • To discuss with mentor / supervisor during regular supervision the organising and planning of own caseload to meet service and patient priorities, readjusting plans as situations change/arise and where appropriate delegate tasks to appropriate Therapy staff.
  • To be an active member of the in-service training programme by attendance at, and participation in, in-service training programmes, tutorials, individual training sessions, external courses and peer review.
  • To contribute to the performance assessment and appraisal of newly qualified Occupational Therapy and Assistant Practitioner staff.
  • To lead by example and by providing support, guidance and training to Occupational Therapy staff and by assessing and evaluating competence.
  • To exercise good personal time management, punctuality and consistent, reliable attendance and to be aware of all the Trust and departmental policies for notification of absence.
  • To comply with all organisational and departmental policies and procedures and complete appropriate documentation.
  • To answer the telephone, record messages and action as necessary.
  • To communicate with external agencies with regard to patient assessments, treatment and rehabilitation and if necessary regarding the provision of equipment.
  • To support the supervision and co-ordination of junior staff, students and Assistant Practitioner staff.


Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma / Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Registered with Health and Care Professions Council
  • Evidence of Professional Development


Desirable

  • knowledge of community services


Experience

Essential

  • Previous community experience
  • Working in MDT
  • Completed a minimum of one rotation which provided cover to Acute Medical Wards


Skills & Knowledge

Essential

  • oPossess knowledge and skills for the assessment and treatment of those clients presenting within a wide range of clinical settings
  • oAware of the impact of the HCPC (and the RCOT where appropriate) professional code of conduct
  • oUnderstanding clinical governance and audit


Desirable

  • Evidence of post grad learning
