We are seeking 1 full time 37.5 hours Epilepsy Clinical Specialist Nurse.

The successful applicant will be based at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust. You will work Monday to Friday 9-5 with some flexibility dependent on clinical need.

The Epilepsy service is growing and developing, we recognise the need for development for a motivated registered nurse. Therefore, applicants with significant neurology and/or epilepsy experience will be considered for the Band 6 development post as part of a structured developmental plan for the Epilepsy CNS post.

The expectation for the band 6 development post will be to complete the independent prescribing course with progression to the band 7 role following completeness of Epilepsy Nurse competencies. During your development you will support a caseload of epilepsy patients and as you develop you will have a greater level of autonomy reviewing patients independently

The applicant with an Epilepsy/Neurology background will require the

Independent prescribing course.

The service will support a robust development plan to ensure you are able to function at the high autonomous level required for safe and competent practice within epilepsy.

You will be supported by 2 Neurology Consultants and 2 Epilepsy Clinical Nurse Specialist.

Our neurology team works in collaboration with University Hospital Birmingham.

Main duties of the job

To work in conjunction with Consultant Neurologist and CCG to develop Epilepsy Services for patients within the Walsall area to develop an integrated approach to Epilepsy Management.

To provide educational advice and support to patients, carers and staff involved in caring for Epilepsy patients.

The role involves both a Clinical Nurse Specialist and Advanced Practitioner role to support the care of patients within the Walsall area accessing the Neurology Service.

To provide continual assessment and monitoring of the needs of those with acute and chronic epilepsy and provide psychological assessment of those with multifaceted seizure disorders (epilepsy and non-epilepsy) and concomitant and behavioural sequelae.

To provide in reach to wards and ED for patients known to the Epilepsy service.

Main Responsibilities

General Areas
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To act as Co-Ordinator for the Epilepsy service and facilitate communications between the Hospital Service, Primary Care Teams and Community Services.

2. To provide Nurse Specialist input to Neurologist Clinics, supporting the Neurologist in the treatment and education of new and long-standing Epilepsy patients.

3. Co-ordinate highly specialist patient treatment for hospitalized patients and act as a resource to all areas by giving clinical advice.

4. To develop new nurse led initiatives, maintain, manage and run established nurse-led Epilepsy clinics for new onset/newly referred patients, chronic follow up and antenatal.

5. To provide advice to patients and carers on treatment programmes and to support the medical staff in monitoring outcomes of treatment.

6. Support Walsall GP Practices in management of patients with epilepsy by providing specialist advice and training.

7. To participate in developing and providing education programmes in the management of Epilepsy for patients, carers and healthcare professionals within the Walsall area.

8. Provide an accessible service to those with chronic Epilepsy, paying special attention to the psychological and social needs of this patient group.

9. To act as a specialist resource for patients or carers providing information on agencies/organisations who are able to offer support.

10. To develop a cross boundary Epilepsy Care Pathway in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team.

11. Maintains the Trusts aims and objectives within the clinical setting.

12. Accountable and responsible for accurate and legible record keeping in accordance with local policies and NMC guidelines.

13. Maintains the Trusts aims and objectives within the clinical setting.

14. Administer medicinal products to include PGDs and intravenous drugs in accordance with Trust policies. Supervises and assesses junior nursing staff in additional skill training.

15. Undertake additional training as required to meet the needs of the patients within the Stroke Unit and register any additional skills as a result of enhanced practise.
PRESCRIBING 1. Administer medications including developing group directives and independent prescribing as per Trust policies and national frameworks.
2. Compile clinical management plans and utilise supplementary prescribing skills appropriately within the primary and secondary care setting.

3. Undertake additional training as required to meet the needs of the patients and register any additional skills acquired as a result of enhanced practice.

4. Make decisions based on consultation with patients and monitor outcomes of treatment and refer to medical team should complications develop.

QUALITY INITIATIVES
1. Responsible for ensuring commitment to maintaining a high quality of service to patients by continual development of practice in the light of research evidence and by audit against clinically relevant standards as an individual practitioner and for the Department/ Unit.

2. Contribute to the business planning/service planning within Neurology.

3. Lead Practitioner in developing policies and procedures for the Epilepsy Service.

4. Co-ordinate Trust wide audit and benchmarking activity of Epilepsy Service against NICE Guidelines.

5. Participate in working groups and committees as required by the Trust by providing specialist input as deemed appropriate.

6. In addition, individual staff have a role in suggesting and implementing approved improvements to service(s) and in exercising professional responsibility for both themselves and their peers within an open fair and just culture.

7. Adhere to the Trusts complaint procedure with regard to written and verbal complaints using appropriate referral mechanisms in order to resolve the situation. Will work with Matron/ PALS team to highlight particular deficits in relation to complaints.

8. Contribute to under the direction of Matron and other clinical nurse specialists clinical leadership activity through generation and implementation of policies and practise guidelines developing care pathways where appropriate.
CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
1. Responsible for the assessment and continual professional development of department/ unit staff using mechanisms such as Individual Performance Review (IPR) to generate a Personal Development Plan (PDP) in accordance with Trust polices and procedures.

2. Participates in the teaching and supervision of the clinical team including, where applicable medical staff, learners nurse and others under training allocated to the Department/ Unit. Provides mentorship to all staff
3. Co-ordinate a Link Nurse Practitioner function within the clinical areas in order to enhance personal, team and patient knowledge in relation to Epilepsy issues in clinical areas. 4. Contribute to efforts to support Clinical Supervision Policy to undertake clinical supervision as either supervisor/supervisee. 5. Participate in curricular development of education programmes as required.
