The Perinatal Mental Health Service provides a Multi-disciplinary specialised care throughout the West Midlands, to treat mothers with mental health problems, both during pregnancy and in the first year post-partum. There is also community outreach team as well as 10 inpatient bedded Unit at the Barberry. The NHS Long Term Plan (LTP) will see perinatal services expanding its remit to seeing approx. 10% of the birth rate, seeing women for up to 2 years postnatally, expanding its offer to partners and providing an increasingly comprehensive range of therapies to women and their families.

This is a new Highly Specialist Clinical/Counselling Psychology post leading the delivery of high quality, evidence based psychological therapies in the Sandwell and West Birmingham Community Team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will lead on the provision of psychological assessment and specialist perinatal therapeutic interventions for women with moderate to severe perinatal mental health problems, and those with pre-existing severe mental health disorders to promote well-being, mother-infant relationships and reduce risk during a vulnerable time for women's mental health.

Providing clinical supervision , consultation and supporting the South Perinatal MDT team members to provide psychologically based care and treatment.

N.B. This team currently works in partnership with BCHFT in providing a service to women in Sandwell, however over the next 1-2 years is likely to increasingly focus on providing care to women in West Birmingham, as the BCHFT perinatal service continues its own growth into Sandwell. Close partnership working between the two organisations will continue to be essential in providing high quality, consistent care to women across the Black Country.

Person Specification Experience Essential
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology
  • Assessed experience of working as a qualified clinical psychologist for a minimum of four years (with 2 years at a highly specialist level).
  • Experience of working with perinatal mental health problems.
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or Experience of providing professional or clinical supervision.
  • Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice directly relevant to perinatal mental health.
  • Experience of adapting psychological therapy to the perinatal period.
  • Experience of service development and/or quality improvement.
