Gresham 1 Ward is an intensive care unit which is a busy, highly functioning 20-bed female ward located on Bethlem Royal Hospital site. We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic Clinical Charge Nurse to join our well-established team within Croydon Acute Care Service.

The Clinical Charge Nurse's role is suitable for Registered Mental Nurses who have successfully completed preceptorship and have registered as an approved NMC mentor.

The successful candidate is expected to work with the ward team and the manager in providing high-quality nursing care and leadership. He/she will be a highly skilled and well-motivated individual with considerable experience of working in a dynamic acute mental health service.

The post holder will be responsible for implementing and monitoring all policies and ensuring that the ward functions in line with the Trust and the ward's philosophy of providing respectful compassionate care that is of the highest quality.The post holder will also ensure that supervision and appraisal systems are robustly implemented and that the care provided is of the highest possible standard in line with the service's clinical governance framework. The Clinical Charge Nurse is expected to work closely with the Ward Manager who is ultimately responsible for providing a safe environment within which all staff can deliver care and support to patients and their significant others. He/she must ensure effective deployment of resources within agreed budgets.

Main duties of the job

Working as part of a multi -disciplinary team you will have excellent communication skills and team working abilities. A key role of the Clinical Charge Nurse is to lead by example and be a role model for the nursing team. We are looking for an individual who is able to support junior staff and students in their professional development, through excellent and effective clinical leadership and sharing of knowledge.

You will work very closely with the ward manager and other Clinical Charge Nurses to ensure that the unit maintains the highest standard of care provision and safe level of staffing. The post holder will have a role in all aspects of service development and improvement. In return, our service will provide you with high levels of supervision and support during your working career with us and provide you with personal development plans to help you develop in this role.

You will develop confidence in assessing risk on a formal and informal basis and be able to balance this effectively with acting in the least restrictive way, fostering a safe yet therapeutic service.

It is essential you have an understanding of the challenges that face nurses caring for individual's with mental health difficulties today and be able to demonstrate resilience and empathy. Most important to us is that you have a commitment and passion to want to be part of an excellent service.

Essential

  • Registered Mental Health Nurse


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of researchbased/reflective practice, e.g. understanding and ability to use supervision to reflect on skills, attitude and knowledge and develop these by using evidence based practice
  • Significant relevant clinical experience
  • Knowledge of relevant Professional and Clinical legislation
  • Experience of assessing physical health needs in a mental health setting
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and audit


Desirable

  • Experience of engaging / supporting clinical research projects
  • Experience of supporting practice development in clinical areas Eg. Quality Improvement initiative


Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Provides quality care that is responsive to service user's needs and demonstrates an inclusive approach
