We have an exciting opportunity for an Clinical Specialist Nurse to shape, develop andto be the one of the first to join our mental health team at HMP Millsike, a brand new Category B men's prison, located in the village of Full Sutton near York.

HMP Millsike will have an operational capacity of 1500 people who will spend their sentences learning the skills they need to find work on release as part of the government's drive to cut reoffending. The prison site is currently under construction and Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust were recently awarded the Mental Health Service contract to begin delivering services in April 2025.

This is a rare opportunity to be part of a new mental health team of a brand new prison site.

Your clinical expertise and extensive knowledge will support the delivery of Mental Health provision and develop pathways, quality care and clinical governance structures.

You will have extensive experience of working within an prison or wider forensic services. You will have a positive and compassion focused attitude towards service users within the prison environment. You will have an awareness of the clinical difficulties that arise for individuals within secure environments and be able to lead by example. The post requires the highest standards of professional practice, and exceptional communication and relationship skills.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an experienced Nurse who will thrive amongst the multi-disciplinary team of professionals to assess, plan and provide patient care. You will work within a team of Registered Mental Health and Learning Disability Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Langauge Therapists, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Primary Care Mental Health Practitioners as well as wider partner agencies including primary care services, social care and prison colleagues.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Experience

Essential

  • Current Professional Registration with Nursing and Midwifery Council - RMN / RNLD/ RGN (RNSC - CAMHS Only)
  • Recognised Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor or currently in progress of achieving.
  • Trained in Clinical Supervision and providing Clinical Supervision or in the process of achieving
  • Postgraduate diploma in a subject relevant to the area Or be willing to work towards and achieve within 2 years and
  • Within the first year of being in post hold a recognised qualification in a governed therapy/advanced clinical qualification e.g Intermediate Systemic Family Therapy/Post Grad diploma in CBT/British Isles Dialectical Behaviour Therapy /NMP (Independent Prescriber)
  • And have Equivalent clinical experience to that of a Post Grad Diploma/master's level such as working as a band 6 (or above) in relevant clinical area with significant experience (see below under experience), together with evidence of relevant CPD
  • Significant experience working with patients with complex needs in the specialist field.
  • Significant experience working with patients who display risk behaviours
  • Clinical risk assessment and management and its application in practice
  • Working collaboratively with service users their families and carers
  • Working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Quality improvement activities


Knowledge

Essential

  • Extensive knowledge of current issues relating to health needs of patients in the field of practice, regionally and nationally
  • Understanding and working knowledge of the legal framework and statutory obligations under the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act
  • Detailed understanding of Safeguarding and its application in practice.
  • Clinical Risk Assessment and Management and its application in practice
  • Clinical Governance and its application in practice.
  • Working knowledge of clinical medicines management
  • Understanding of psychological models of care and treatment (depending on specialist area)
