We have an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our integrated mental health teams at HMP Hull, HMP Humber, HMP Full Sutton and HMP Millsike. We are seeking to recruit a Forensic Consultant Psychiatrist or a Consultant Psychiatrist with substantial forensic experience who is passionate about improving the lives of individuals within the prison setting who are experiencing complex mental health needs.

The role involves working 40 hours a week (10 PA's). You will provide care and treatment for adult men with a wide range of mental health needs.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in partnership with providers Tees Esk and Wear Valley NHS Foundation Trust,Spectrum, Practice Plus Group and Rethink. Within this role you will be working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary teams to deliver excellent clinical care.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant Psychiatrist will provide clinical interventions to the mental health teams serving the populations of the HMP Hull, Humber, Full Sutton and Millsike.

Your responsibilities:
  • Provide senior medical leadership to the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Undertake the assessment and management of complex cases referred and to care plan, to provide treatment formulation and guidance on evidence-based treatment and effectiveness.
  • Develop professional relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Contribute, through peer supervision, to colleagues within the team especially with regard to complex cases. Work within the principles of the Care Programme Approach.
  • Work flexibly with colleagues to enable the smooth running of the service, and to ensure the most appropriate care is provided to each individual patient.
  • Undertake assessments and management of prisoners within the identified prisons.
  • If transfers are required to hospitals, to liaise with secure hospitals and arrange timely transfer of care.

Job description

Job responsibilities

As a consultant working for our prison based mental health teams, you will have responsibility for the provision of safe and effective care and treatment which is evidence based. You will share the vision of integrated and multi-disciplinary working and actively engage in the development of the service through research and support.

The post holder would be expected to be approved as a Responsible Clinician or be willing to undertake training to obtain Section 12(2) MHA and will be expected to renew this approval according to agreed procedures.

The ability to commute within the Trusts geographical area with access to the appropriate means of transport is essential.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • CCT in Forensic Psychiatry OR Eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register (higher trainees should be within six months of CCT at the time of interview)


Desirable

  • MRCPsych
  • Additional clinical qualifications
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.


Eligibility

Essential

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months
  • Experience of working in UK prisons
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment (the Trust will appoint a section12(2) to provide this role in the sector during the transition).
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment.


Desirable

  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
