Are you a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with a passion to become a Systemic Family Practitioner? Do you have some basic knowledge of Family Therapy, experience working with young people and want to take the next step in your career?

If you have a core profession in mental health (this is essential), this might be for you. You may be a nurse, a social worker or an OT, with a keen interest in developing your therapy skills.

We have an exciting opportunity to join our CAMHS community team, based in Taunton. This is a Recruit to Train role, which is part of the HEE funded programme in partnership with Exeter University.

You will attend university two days per week. During the remaining part of the week, you will work as a trainee in our dynamic community CAMHS service, under close supervision, working within the limits of your experience for your stage of training. You will need to have flexibility and adaptability and a passion for working with young people, and their families/carers.

The teams work across a range of locations including clinics, hospitals and people's homes.

Main duties of the job

You'll be enrolled in a postgraduate diploma with the University of Exeter and must be able to demonstrate an ability to study at postgraduate level. This is part time study and will cover core skills in working systemically with young people and their families.

You must attend all elements of the programme of study and progress successfully through the course. The training will be fully funded, and if you pass the course, you will be offered a full-time qualified position. In return, we expect candidates to stay with us for at least two years after qualifying.

Job responsibilities

You will undertake the Post Graduate Diploma in Systemic Family Practice, and be employed in our CAMHS West community team.

The university programme will enable practitioners to develop their knowledge, skills and competency in SFP for adolescents with self-harm/depression and their families and for young people (over 10 years) with conduct problems..

In your CAMHS workplace you will have responsibility for the assessment, treatment and evaluation of treatment provided to clients referred to the team in addition to being aligned to our Family Therapists.

You will be supported to complete your Postgraduate Diploma in Systemic Family Therapy and this post is subject to your successful application to a course commencing in January 2025. The course will be fully funded and you will be provided adequate study time for your course commitments. You will receive supervision from a Systemic Family Therapist who is experienced in working within CAMHS, alongside the support you receive on the university course.

The post holder will work autonomously and collaboratively with team members providing services at clinical bases and within client's homes, as well as a range of other settings as appropriate.

Following completion of the university course, you will be eligible to apply for a substantive post.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Recognised professional qualification in nursing, social work or occupational therapy
  • Evidence of continuous post-qualifying professional development.


Desirable

  • Post-qualifying training in therapeutic interventions.


Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge and understanding of mental health disorders in children and young people, and their impact on both the client group and their families/carers.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of evidence-based treatment/therapeutic interventions.
  • Knowledge and experience of risk assessment and risk management planning with high risk young people.
  • Experience of working with children and young people.
  • Experience of multi-agency working.
  • Experience and understanding of Safeguarding Children and other relevant legislation and policies.


Additional Criteria

Essential

  • Excellent organisational skills, ability to manage own time and plan timed activities, including building in travel time to and between appointments.
  • Ability to recognise and manage challenging situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Able to take instruction and direction and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to record and retrieve information on paper/electronic records as appropriate.
  • High standards of written communication skills with the ability to use email and internet.
  • Experience of multi-agency working.
  • Experience and understanding of Safeguarding Children and other relevant legislation and policies.
  • Excellent organisational skills, ability to manage own time and plan timed activities, including building in travel time to and between appointments.
  • Must be a car driver with a valid driving licence or have access to transport with appropriate business insurance in order to travel throughout the Trust, to meet the needs of the service.
