An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Offender Healthcare Service at HMP Belmarsh. This is a unique opportunity for a RGN to be part of Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust and to work at one of the high security prisons in the UK. You will assist us to provide excellent primary care and work alongside substance misuse services and mental health team.

Offenders are a challenging population group to work with and they often have complex healthcare needs. Offenders often have chaotic lives in the community and a history of poor engagement with community healthcare services. With high rates of physical, substance misuse and mental health problems, this is a real chance to make a difference.

You will be joining our established team of nurses across the prison at an exciting time and will be part of a multidisciplinary team supporting the following services: Primary Care services including First Night in Custody Reception screening, secondary screening, nurse clinics, long term condition management, Emergency Response and Substance Misuse nursing services. You will be supported by our friendly team of healthcare staff in an environment where no two days are the same.

Main duties of the job

The Post holder will work as clinical lead in HMP Belmarsh:

Reception / First Night Centre House blocks / HSU & SEG / Outpatients and nurse led clinics.

Provide quality primary care interventions to offenders

Provide direct line management, leadership and support to junior colleagues. Assist & support senior staff to deliver a nurse-led integrated primary care service

Develop specialist practice-based clinical models of care to HMP Belmarsh. Provide a range of quality services and interventions

The post holder will exercise a degree of personal and professional autonomy, make complex and critical judgments under the management of the Primary Care Clinical Lead and have decision making skills to satisfy the expectations of the role.

To be responsible for primary care staff rotas, considering efficient use of resources, staff capacity and changing service needs.

Responsible for staff supervision and annual appraisal

To support and undertake research, clinical audit and evaluate the service as directed. This will include acute care, long term conditions management and health promotion activities and be in line with the NHS Plan, public health and National Service Frameworks.

To demonstrate and provide robust clinical leadership to junior staff with a sound understanding of evidence-based nursing practice to provide a pro-active approach to ensure quality and outcome driven practice on a day-to-day basis.

To participate in all monitoring systems to promote the development of evidence-based practice in the specialist field and to promote research as appropriate.

To lead in the professional clinical supervision program, to ensure all junior staff receive appropriate supervision, training and annual appraisal to ensure that it becomes an integral part of team practice.

Lead in the identification of all aspects of specific service, training and personal development needs.

To lead in the implementation of effective and appropriate patient centred care planning tools / Care Programme Approach (CPA) and consistent delivery throughout all the prisons and forensic units within the service.

The post holder will participate in all service reviews as required.

Act as an authorized signatory as well as being responsible for the booking of temporary staffing.

We are looking for an adult trained (RGN) Band 6 nurse from a wide variety of backgrounds. Experience of working in a prison environment as a RGN is essential while experience of nursing care of patients with substance misuse would be an advantage, but not essential as full support and training will be provided.
