The CAMHS Crisis Team Senior Practitionerrole is suitable for Registered Nurses and Allied Professionals.

They are expected to form a close working relationship with colleagues across Lewisham CAMHS and the South London Partnership. This role exists to contribute to Crisis Care, particularly through clinical presentations at University Hospital Lewisham A& E.

The post holder will deliver, or advise on the delivery of high quality safe crisis care, ensuring consistently high standards of practice and clinical excellence which comply with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code of professional conduct. As a CAMHS Crisis Team Senior Practitioner you will support the Team Leader and junior colleagues to promote and develop excellent clinical practice. You will be a positive role model to junior members of the team through the practice of evidence-based care. You will be expected to support professional development through clinical appraisal and supervision and contribute to the ongoing educational programme for all staff, fostering a positive learning environment.

Main duties of the job

1. To provide a specialist triage, and mental health assessment for children and young people attending University Hospital Lewisham A& E in Crisis.

2. To undertake and co-ordinate CAMHS assessments assimilating and interpreting complex information from a variety of sources.

3. To coordinate and manage treatment delivery to young people, including developing, reviewing and adapting interventions whilst they remain in A& E.

4. To communicate assessment and treatment information to young people their families and to other professionals.

5. To liaise with a range of professionals from across services to develop appropriate care plans for the safe discharge of young people from A& E.

6. To undertake proactive risk management and safety planning in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team.

About us

The Lewisham CAMHS Crisis Team is based in the Kaleidoscope Centre, Rushy Green Catford and provides an outreach service to University Hospital Lewisham A& E for young people up to age 18 years who are presenting in Crisis.

This is a small dedicated and friendly multidisciplinary team of mainly nurses with a consultant rota. The team work flexibly with some opportunity to work from home (25% max). There is good support within the team, from psychiatry and senior leadership within Lewisham CAMHS.

Job responsibilities

To provide specialist mental health and risk assessments, formulations and interventions for children and young people in Lewisham CAMHS Crisis Team whilst they are in A& E.

To assess and monitor risk and draw up appropriate risk management plans for children and young people in your care and work under the supervision of senior clinicians and closely with consultant psychiatrists to manage these situations effectively.

To be a member of a number of internal and external professional networks to ensure that care plans for individual children and services across agencies are coordinated efficiently and effectively.

Support and empower children, young people and families to make informed choices about the intervention.

To support children and young people experiencing moderate to severe mental health difficulties and their families in the self-management of presenting difficulties upon safe discharge.

To work in partnership with families to provide culturally appropriate psychological interventions with carers or families of referred clients when required.

To assess and monitor risk and draw up appropriate risk management plans.

To develop and help deliver workshops, groups for children and young people especially the 17 plus 6 months and above.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

• Entry-level qualification: appropriately registered Clinical psychologist, Systemic Family Therapist, Psychotherapist, Nurse, CBT Therapist
• Relevant professional registration with appropriate body. All applicants will require a professional training with professional registration with one of the following statutory bodies: the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC), Social Work England (SWE), Health and Care Professional's Council (HCPC), Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP), The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), or accreditation with British Association Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP)

Desirable

• Mentorship Training/ Supervision Training and regular updates.
• Additional, recognised therapeutic qualification

Experience

Essential

• Experience of assessment, treatment and risk management of children, young people and families with a range of presenting problems of a complex nature
• Experience that supports working with, and addressing issues of, diversity within local communities. This may have been gained through work, research, volunteering and / or lived experience
• Evidence of having worked as a clinical specialist under supervision in CAMHS.
• A range of therapeutic skills and experience including CBT informed practice and group work.

Desirable

• Experience of improving patient experience of the clinical environment.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

• Knowledge of psychopathology and the evidence base for the treatment of young people with mental health difficulties and broader issues e.g. developmental issues, cultural factors that may be relevant to treatment
• Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health issues, child and adult protection, and equalities.
• To communicate skilfully and sensitively complex and sensitive information with clients, carers and colleagues overcoming barriers to communication including sensory, and emotional difficulties, cultural differences and hostility to or rejection of information.
• Demonstrate skilful liaison with internal and external organisations

Ability

Essential

• Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary/multi-agency team, contributing to effective team functioning and holding team roles.
• Ability to work as an autonomous practitioner with appropriate level of clinical and managerial supervision.
• Ability to manage emotionally stressful situations such as working with victims of abuse or trauma, or with people who engage in severe self-harming or aggressive behaviour.
