This post is for 1 WTE Consultant Psychiatrist working within the Central Islington Core Community Mental Health Team as work progresses with the transformation of community mental health services in line with the NHS Long Term plan. The post is substantive. The post-holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team which includes both statutory and voluntary sector roles and provides holistic care to patients in a primary care setting aligned to the Central Primary Care Networks in Islington.

Main duties of the job

To provide advice and support to Central Islington GPs, and other practice staff, regarding the assessment and management of the mental health difficulties of patients registered with their practice. This may be done through case discussions, joint consultations and bespoke training as appropriate. To provide consultant input and clinical leadership to the Central Islington multidisciplinary team. To assist with diagnosis, formulation, medication reviews, management plans, risk assessments, crisis plans and self-help plans as required for these patients referred to the team. It is anticipated that the post holder will conduct 8-10 assessments per week and hold a caseload of up to 40 patients at any one time.To provide direct clinical assessments of patients registered with the Central Islington GP practices, and to provide follow up as appropriate. To assist in the prioritization (triage) of new referrals to the service. Tomaintain effective communication with key stakeholders including GPs, the local authority, primary care staff, patients and their carers. Please see job description for more information.

The job for Consultant Psychiatrist in the Mental Health Core Team offers considerable scope to work creatively and with flexibility. The multi-disciplinary team has introduced new posts such as Peer Coaches, Population Health Nurses, and Voluntary Sector colleagues. This enables an expansion of the social dimension of care, supporting people to expand structured meaningful activities and make links to community-based groups and activities. All team members are encouraged to take a holistic approach to their work, working with patients to help bring meaning to their struggles and life experiences, bearing in mind the impact of trauma and social precariousness. Person Specification

Education/Qualifications/Registration

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 6 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training
  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry
  • Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician?Application formLetter of Section 12(2)/ Approved Clinician approval
  • Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing


Desirable

  • Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training


Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice.
  • Clinical knowledge & experience of the full range mental disorders including those with severe enduring mental illnesses & personality disorders.
  • Clinical knowledge & experience of the full range mental disorders including those with severe enduring mental illnesses & personality disorders.
  • Experience in the assessment and management of complex clinical cases including experience of crisis / emergency high risk presentations.
  • Expertise in risk assessment, formulation and management


Desirable

  • Experience in teaching small and large groups


Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change.
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and influence others.
  • Good knowledge of and ability to use both spoken and written English
  • Ability to organise workload and manage time and delegate responsibility where appropriate
