The Service for Children and Adolescents with Neuro-developmental disorders (SCAN) is a specialist team for children and young people with severe learning disabilities and neuro-developmental disorders, who attend a Special Educational Needs Education Provision, where the degree of impairment is coupled with mental health problems. It has close links with the Child Development Team, which provides specialist assessment and intervention for children up to the age of 6 years where there are concerns about developmental difficulties.

Main duties of the job

• To provide formal (ADOS-2) and informal assessment and appropriate advice in respect of the social communication needs of children and young people presenting with ND difficulties.
• To support schools to meet social communication needs of children and young people with neurodevelopmental difficulties.
• To liaise with local health and educational authorities as appropriate.
• To deliver workshops and trainings to parents/carers, colleagues and other professionals as required.
• To attend clinical meeting and in-service training as required.
• To keep up to date with new techniques and research for the maintenance and promotion of good practice especially in relation to students with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Job responsibilities

• To provide neurodevelopmental assessment, differential diagnostic assessment, support and intervention to individuals, families or groups in Enfield CAMHS NDS Pathway, under supervision.
• To provide clinical supervision and training to other clinicians and trainees.
• To be aware of the effectiveness of different targeted approaches to the treatment and management of social communication impairments for children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders.
• To produce and implement plans for strategies and therapies targeting neurodevelopmental disorders, and using evidenced based interventions, across the full range of care settings.
• To offer advice and consultation on clients psychological care to colleagues, professional and non-professional staff in mental health services and appropriate agencies, and/or carers.
• Evaluate and make decisions about treatment options, based on both theoretical and therapeutic models.
• To educate students and train staff so that reasonable adjustments are made to enable secondary age students with ASC to function well in school and integrate where appropriate.
• To develop collaborative working relationships with school and work alongside multi-agency services to provide appropriate support for children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders in mainstream provisions.
• To utilise research skills and core professional training for audit, service development and research within the area served by the service.
• To work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the teams policies and procedures.

Person Specification

Education

Essential

• Clinical Nurse Specialist: Mental Health Nursing Qualifications at Degree level or equivalent and professional registration with the NMC with additional therapies training.
• ADOS-2 training
• Evidence of additional specialist training related to neurodevelopmental disorders.

Desirable

• 3DI or ADI-R training
• Specialist training in a subject/skill relevant to Child & and Adolescent Mental Health (0-18 years)

Skills

Essential

• Ability to develop good therapeutic relationships and maintain professional boundaries.
• Ability to be self-reflective on personal and professional development and use clinical supervision to explore and understand distress both directly with patients and indirectly.
• Understanding of child development and psychosocial influences.

Desirable

• Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings

Experience

Essential

• Specific Therapy training
• At least 2 years post registration experience in CAMHS.
• Experience working with children and young people with neurodevelopmental disorders

Desirable

• Experience of working in a range of cultural contexts
• To identify the social communication needs of students to support schools to lead social skills groups, promote good peer relationships and self-confidence.
