An opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Specialist Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist to join Lewisham Tier 3 CAMHS.

We are looking for an ACP registered child and adolescent psychotherapist with a broad range of experience, including working with children and families who present with a high level of complexity and require skilled and multi-layered assessments and intervention. Child and adolescent psychotherapists currently ending their training are welcome to apply and the post would be equally suitable for somebody with experience working at Band 7 already, but who wishes to take on a new challenge.

Successful applicants will be joining an exciting developing psychoanalytic psychotherapy team. There will be many opportunities for learning, supervision, development and integrative working with young people with moderate to severe mental health problems.

Main duties of the job

To provide a specialist psychotherapy service within Lewisham Generic CAMHS team - Horizon - including specialist and generic assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes, and have a care coordinating caseload.

The post holder will participate on the local CAMHS duty rota and undertake emergency assessments when required.

To contribute to enabling other staff, service users and carers from diverse backgrounds to flourish by working to create a psychologically safe environment.

To provide clinical supervision and consultation as appropriate.

To undertake service evaluation, audit and research.

To work as an autonomous professional within Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP) guidelines and codes of conduct, and guided by the policies and procedures of the service, taking responsibility for own work including treatment and discharge decisions with support of clinical colleagues. Applications are welcomed from doctoral students in their final year of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy training.

About us

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust has the largest child and adolescent mental health service in the country and are national leaders. It is made up of five clinical units: National & Specialist, Lewisham, Southwark, Lambeth and Croydon.

Lewisham has a very high level of social need and mental illness in adults. Children aged 0-19 years number 64,000. Nearly 8% live in single parent households and up to 30% of households are without a wage earner. Children from black and ethnic minority groups represent 37% of 0-14 year olds. The number of looked after children is approximately 480. 20% of children are currently experiencing 3 or more psychosocial difficulties, and 46% of children live in families with three or more risk factors.

Lewisham CAMHS provides a multidisciplinary diagnostic, assessment, treatment, advisory and consultative service for children and adolescents with emotional and behavioural disorders at high risk or those with more severe and persistent problems suggestive of psychiatric disorder. The service has five Specialist Multidisciplinary Teams: Horizon (Generic), Neuro Developmental Team (for neurodevelopmental problems including ASD), Symbol (for Looked After and Adopted CYP) LYPS (severe and enduring mental health problems), ARTs (for young offenders), Paediatric Liaison Service (for children with psychological problems associated with chronic health conditions) and CWP(mild to moderate depression, anxiety or behavioural problems.

Qualifications & Professional Registration

Essential

  • Doctorate Level 6 year ACP accredited training in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy which includes a minimum of 4 years' full time clinical training and one's own intensive analysis.
  • Full member of Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP)


Experience

Essential

  • Pre-qualification professional experience with children, adolescents and families (eg clinical/educational psychology, teaching, social work)
  • Advanced knowledge and skills in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and its effective application to the mental health problems of children and adolescents with complex disorders and diagnosis, including pervasive and severe emotional and psychological difficulties
  • Substantial experience of work with complex family situations.
  • Substantial experience of clinical and service related supervision and consultation
  • Substantial experience in working in multidisciplinary, multi-agency, multicultural context.
  • Experience of receiving professional supervision across a range of client needs.
  • Experience that supports working with, and addressing issues of, diversity within local communities. This may have been gained through work, research, volunteering and / or lived experience.
  • Experience of developing and carrying out research projects.


Desirable

  • Substantial experience of work with therapeutic groups of children
  • Substantial experience of work with families challenged with parental mental health
  • oTraining in supervision and/or leadership skills


Knowledge

Essential

  • Theoretical knowledge of psychopathology and the evidence base for Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy.
  • Knowledge of psychotherapeutic assessment and clinical psychometrics.
  • Post-graduate level knowledge of psychotherapeutic research methodology.
  • Knowledge of factors affecting acceptability and accessibility of mental health care.
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health issues, child and adult protection, and equalities.


Desirable

  • Knowledge of research methodology.


Skills

Essential

  • To deliver psychotherapy across cultural and other differences.
  • To select and administer specialist psychotherapeutic assessments, interpreting and integrating complex data that require analysis, interpretation and comparison, drawn from several sources.
  • To communicate skilfully and sensitively complex and sensitive information with clients, carers and colleagues overcoming barriers to communication including sensory, and emotional difficulties, cultural differences and hostility to or rejection of information.
  • To plan and schedule assessment and interventions for individual clients and groups and carers, and for meetings such as CPA and case reviews.
  • Well-developed IT skills including entry and analysis of research data.


Desirable

  • Skills in consultation to clinical staff and other agencies.


Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, contributing to effective team functioning and holding team roles.
  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate.
  • Ability to maintain concentration and to remain in restricted positions for long periods during observations, assessments and psychotherapeutic interventions, and to deal with unexpected interruptions or changes during these.
  • Ability to manage emotionally stressful situations such as working with victims of abuse or trauma, or with people who engage in severe self-harming or aggressive behaviour.
  • Ability to manage verbal aggression and hostility directed at self.
