The role of Perinatal Duty mental health practitioner will be to work within the duty team and brief intervention pathway of the Perinatal service to provide timely assessment and contact to patients who have been referred to the service. Duty assessments and contacts are undertaken via video and telephone call. The role also includes working as part of the Brief Intervention pathway within the service to identify and provide brief perinatal interventions to patients with low risk, noncomplex perinatal illness.

Main duties of the job

*Undertakes assessments, consultations and provides telephone support to patients under the service who are requiring additional support.

*Assesses and identifies risk, especially perinatal red flags, and completes high quality risk assessments. Where high risks are identified, the mental health nurse/practitioner ensures liaison.

*Assess the impact of a parent's mental illness on baby, notifying relevant agencies of concerns if appropriate.

*To identify, establish and evaluate care plans and liaise with other team members when needed about them.

*Identify and report any areas of concern regarding child or adult protection issues complete safeguarding referrals when required.

*To work in a sensitive and attuned way with women/birthing people/birthing people, infants, partners and wider families that enables containment during highly emotive transition period in parental lives.

*Develop and maintain clinical skills necessary for caring for women/birthing people within the agreed service criteria through a variety of learning opportunities.

*Provide specialist advice/support to professionals and mothers regarding safe medication usage in pregnancy and whilst breast/chest feeding, liaising with prescribers for medication commencement/changes and medication effectiveness monitoring.

*Providing psychoeducation and skills-based work.

*Maintain clear communication systems, and risk is managed effectively.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • *Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) qualification/ Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy/ Certificate of qualification in Social Work/ or Diploma or Degree in Social Work. E.g., Dip SW, Ba Social work.
  • *Previous experience in a relevant Adult Mental Health
  • Service community setting with care coordinator experience.
  • *Knowledge and understanding of the needs of
  • women/birthing people suffering from perinatal mental
  • illness through evidence of ongoing formal training.
  • *Evidence of working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • *Evidence of working closely with other agencies
  • e.g., Children and Families Teams within statutory agencies, primary care teams and organisations within the voluntary
  • sector
  • *Evidence of commitment to quality improvement in own
  • clinical area and/or service provision.
  • *Evidence of commitment to the principles of
  • user/carer empowerment.
  • *Post-basic professional development/portfolio evidence
  • *Drivers licence and use of suitable transport to carry
  • out the job of community nursing within a rural and urban geographical area.
