We have a very exciting opportunity for an experienced Physiotherapist to join our team, specialising in Neurosciences, including Hyper-acute & acute inpatient Stroke Services and Acute Neurology. The post will suit individuals who have completed their core rotations (on a Band 5 Physiotherapist rotation program) or already have experience at Band 6 and are looking to develop specialist skills working with Stroke and Neurology patients.

The successful applicant would be working as part of a forward-thinking multidisciplinary Neurosciences Team.

You will be supported by highly specialist senior staff and will have the opportunity to develop both your clinical and leadership skills working with junior staff, physiotherapy support workers and students.

Continuous Professional Development is actively supported through an established appraisal system, regular in-service training, formal supervision and post graduate library facilities. The team is actively engaged in clinical research and quality improvement.

Participation in the out of hours rotas for emergency on-call, weekend and Bank Holiday working is a requirement of the post.

Fixed term opportunities may also be available

Part time options maybe available but for a minimum of 30 hours per week

Main duties of the job

As post holder your duties will include:
  • To assess, prioritise, treat and manage own caseload of hyper-acute and acute Stroke patients and patients with other varying Neurological conditions. To determine clinical diagnosis and treatment indicated, and maintain records as a legally autonomous practitioner. Patient presentation may be complex/highly complex.
  • To work closely with the Neuroscience MDT to ensure high quality patient care and participate on behalf of the Physiotherapy team in daily MDT meetings.
  • To train, supervise and monitor other physiotherapists, physiotherapy assistant practitioners, assistants and to performance manage students.
  • To provide clinical leadership within the Neurosciences specialty including educational, professional and managerial guidance.
  • To have an active role in the planning, development, coordination, delivery and evaluation of the Physiotherapy service provided to patients within and out-reaching from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Job responsibilities

  • To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work.
  • To maintain a high standard of clinical care for patients under your management.
  • To accept clinical responsibility for a defined caseload of patients and to organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
  • To use communication tools (verbal and non-verbal) and assess understanding of treatment proposals to gain valid informed consent. With support, to work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent to treatment.
  • To collect relevant patient information from a variety of sources e.g. radiology imaging systems, other investigations to assist with clinical prioritisation and patient management. This may also include ward handovers, observation charts, medical and nursing records etc.
  • To undertake the comprehensive specialist assessment of patients using investigative and analytical skills.
  • To make a clinical diagnosis based on presenting signs and symptoms.
  • To formulate an individual management and/or treatment programme using clinical reasoning and a wide range of treatment skills and options.
  • Factors to consider may include altered sensation, decreased perceptual awareness, decreased muscle power, abnormal muscle tone, pre-morbid status.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma / degree in Physiotherapy
  • Registration with the Health & Care Professions Council (UK)


Experience

Essential

  • Significant postgraduate experience as a Physiotherapist in a post with broad-based rotational opportunities. Candidates should have experience in all core areas, however those offering less experience, but meeting all other criteria, will be considered on their merit
  • Student or physiotherapy assistant direct supervision
  • Experience of working as part of a physiotherapy team and multidisciplinary team
  • Involvement in service improvement, audit, research and understanding quality issues


Skills
