An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and highly motivated medical clinician to join the Medical Examiner team, which is hosted by Airedale NHS Foundation Trust.
We currently have a vacancy for 2 posts - 1 pa (4hrs) (Wednesday), 0.5PA )alternate Mondays) each based at Airedale hospital. The successful candidate will be appropriately trained to a level of SAS / Consultant / GPs with at least 5 years post-registration experience.
You will be part of the existing team providing a service to the local population of Airedale undertaking independent scrutiny of all non-coronial death occurring in or out of hospital.
The Airedale ME office has a close working relationship with the ME office in Bradford.
Provision of extended hours at weekends and on back holidays to support the need for urgent burials will require the successful candidates to participate in an on-call rota. Exact details of this requirement are still to be confirmed, outline plans can be discussed on application to the post with the current Lead ME or discussed at interview.
Main duties of the job
The Medical Examiner(s) are expected to screen and review deaths (from the preceding weekend or working day) and this will include liaising with the attending practitioners regarding cause of death and formulation of the MCCD, and with the coroner where appropriate.
Candidates must have successfully completed the mandatory Medical Examiner RCP e-learning modules online (free of charge) by the time they start the role and attend a face-to face training session at the Royal College of Pathologist before fully commencing the role and this needs to be undertaken within the first three months in post but ideally before commencement.
Further additional training may also be required to be undertaken as identified by the National Medical Examiners Office in order to fulfil the role.
The Medical Examiner will act as an independent reviewer of patient deaths, to ensure referrals to the coroner are appropriate, to review the Medical Certificates of Cause of Death (MCCDs) and liaise with the doctor or senior team members regarding the cause of death offered. The role will also liaise with the bereaved relatives to highlight the cause of death and respond to any concerns.
