An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist working within Stroke Services at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Band 8A physiotherapist to be responsible for the organisation and running of the physiotherapy team within Stroke Services at NHNN.They will have highly developed, diverse experience in the assessment and treatment/management of patients following stroke. They will be an integral expert member of the MDT within Stroke Services and will work closely with the Consultant Physiotherapist in Stroke & Rehabilitation (Band 8b) to provide a comprehensive and highly specialist service to patients following stroke. They will be working closely with other members of this dynamic and will have a commitment to enhanced weekend working on a Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays.Applicants must have significant experience working within neurology and stroke rehabilitation and managing a team, including supervision and teaching and training physiotherapists and undergraduate and postgraduate students. They will be involved in Physiotherapy research with a view to producing material for publication.As a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist, you will be responsible for ensuring that the patients' needs are met through the delivery of high-quality standards of care and for ensuring the service meets SSNAP targets and National Clinical Guidelines for Stroke.

Main duties of the job

Lead the physiotherapy team in HASU & ASU, ensuring a high-quality standard of care.

Develop the physiotherapy service in Stroke in response to clinical governance, clinical risk and clinical effectiveness and based on current guidelines, national initiatives and current evidence.

Ensure services are responsive and accessible, including organisation of the 7-day physiotherapy service rota.

Supervise, support, and advise the physiotherapists in their team, enhancing their clinical reasoning and ensuring timely and appropriate transfer along the stroke pathway.

Be an expert physiotherapy practitioner for stroke, assessing and treating patients with complex needs (physical, cognitive and respiratory) and working alongside the MDT to help the patient reach their maximum potential.

Accountable for own professional development.

Lecture/teach students and qualified staff locally, nationally and internationally.

Lead in research projects, audits and service evaluations, publishing work as appropriate.

Network with other specialist therapists, medical colleagues, special interest groups and other services, particularly across NCL.

Timely and accurate collection and analysis of data (including SSNAP), reflecting the full range of physiotherapy provision within stroke services.

Performance management and respond to informal grievances as required.

Assist or lead in the recruitment and selection of physiotherapy staff, and other members of the MDT as requested.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree / diploma in Physiotherapy
  • HPC registered
  • Evidence of post-graduate training in neurosciences to the equivalent of modules at master's level
  • Active member of appropriate special interest group e.g. ACPIN
  • Evidence of management training
  • Evidence of appraisal training
  • Experience of working in the NHS


Desirable

  • Master's degree / working towards a MSc
  • Evidence of teaching skills course
  • Member of the relevant professional college or society


Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 6 years post-graduate experience
  • 6 years' experience treating patients with neurological impairments
  • Previous experience as a band 7 or 8a physiotherapist for a minimum of 2 years
  • Evidence of having supervised qualified therapy staff
  • Experience in initiating and undertaking audit
  • Experience of teaching a wide range of groups, e.g. therapy colleagues, the multidisciplinary team and external agencies.
  • Evidence of active participation in the organisation of education programmes
  • Evidence in involvement in risk management, quality standard setting and clinical effectiveness
  • Evidence of a knowledge of the recruitment and selection process

  • Experience in initiating and undertaking research
