We have a fantastic opportunity for a Band 5, or Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join our Band 6 rotations at UHD.
Our current rotations include our acute teams, NeuroSMART (neuro-specialist rehab team), Stroke team and in the community with our Stroke Early Supported Discharge (ESD) Team.
There will be exposure to other specialist clinical areas such as ENT/voice, head and neck oncology and acquired brain injury with joint teaching, shadowing and professional development opportunities to match your areas of clinical interest.
Due to recent investment in training, we have a number of opportunities for career development including videofluoroscopy and tracheostomy, with cementation of competencies supported through supervision and our regular clinics.
We are friendly, sociable, supportive team with a focus on service improvement and team development. Our Stroke team are currently involved in the international PhEAST study, providing opportunities to be involved in research.
Base Location: Poole or Royal Bournemouth Hospital - cross site working will be required.
We offer a 7-day service to our patients so weekend and bank holiday working will be required.

Main duties of the job

You will work with patients with communication and swallowing difficulties, offering both clinical assessment and rehabilitation. You will be expected to provide formal supervision to B5 SLTs, and informal peer support to your colleagues.

Qualifications
Essential
- Degree in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent
- Dysphagia Competency
- HCPC registration
- Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
Desirable
- Videofluoroscopy competencies RCSLT level 3
- To be competent in the assessment and management of patients with tracheostomy
Experience
Essential
- Experience of working with a range of acquired disorders within an acute care setting including stroke, long-term conditions, and care of the elderly
- Experience of independent assessment, management, therapeutic intervention and discharge of patients with communication disorders and dysphagia
Desirable
- Supervision of students and junior staff
- Working in a Critical Care environment
Technical Skills
Essential
- Skills to assess, manage & treat conditions and patients with complex multi pathologies at specialist level
- Skills in assessment and support of alternative and augmentative communication aids
- Skills to independently prioritise clinical and nonclinical workload

- Sound understanding of the pathology of neurological conditions, respiratory conditions, older person's medicine, gastroenterology.
