We are looking for enthusiastic, confident, dynamic and motivated experienced nurses with excellent communication skills and experience of oncology and haematology patientswhocontribute in maintaining highest standards of care whilst demonstrating effective leadership and providing support.

You are expected to provide ongoing care for Oncology and Haematology patients (including Sickle Cell) in either our inpatient wards (Hawthorn or Olive and Hazel) or join our unit with both inpatient and ambulatory care settings (Young Adult Unit). You will be working with the wider multidisciplinary team in supporting patients receiving chemotherapy, radiotherapy and supportive care.

Overview:

We are looking for nurses wishing to develop their leadership skills and come join us on this exciting journey in caring for our Haematology Oncology patients.

Applicants must hold the mentorship or equivalent, ideally with chemotherapy experience and have experience in shift management as this role involves shift co-ordination. You will be expected to carry out audits, quality rounds and teaching on the ward.

All applicants must have NMC registration and experience in Haematology Oncology.

There are currently vacancies on Hawthorn Ward, Young Adult Unit, and Olive and Hazel.

Main duties of the job

These units require a highly skilled workforce and staff will require experience in caring for patients with cancer or sickle cell disease. Staff will be required to administer chemotherapy and may be required to contribute to the exchange blood transfusion service. Experience of this will be an advantage but training will be provided.

Hawthorn and Olive & Hazel:

Hawthorn Ward is an inpatient ward (15 beds) andOlive and Hazel are joint wards (26 beds) which will deliver specialist inpatient care for people with cancer and blood malignancies.

Young Adult Unit:

The Young Adult Unit (YAU) is a new self-contained specialist unit to deliver inpatient and ambulatory care for young people (16 to 24 years old) with cancer and blood malignancies. The unit will provide 5 inpatient beds, 6 ambulatory beds/chairs, a Social Space, a Caf, The Nest and a Counselling Room. The position on YAU will involve working in both inpatient and Ambulatory Care area.

Job responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the Senior staff role on our new cancer wards (including: Young Adult Unit Hawthorn Olive and Hazel) includes supporting the nursing and multidisciplinary workforce in contributing to delivering high standards of clinical leadership, and committed to excellent standard of patient care.

Responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the specialty. Supporting and leading the team in adhering to areas of compliance and governance. Provide leadership, support and guidance to staff in monitoring the planning and delivering of patient care.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • NMC qualified registered nurse
  • Post registration qualification in or demonstrate relevant experience and competence (appropriate area of speciality)
  • Evidence of professional/clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical, managerial training and CPD
  • SSSAP/Mentorship/Teaching Qualification


Desirable

  • Leadership qualification (eg LEO)
  • SACT trained
  • Apheresis trained


Experience

Essential

  • Previous post registration experience within the relevant specialty (Haematology/Sickle/Chemotherapy)
  • Experiencing of co-ordinating a shift
  • Experience of teaching/assessing/ supervising others in a clinical setting.
  • Supervision of junior staff


Skills

Essential

  • Ability to administer prescribed medication including transfusion of blood and blood products
  • Ability to administer SACT


Professional/ Statutory Registration

Essential

  • RN1/ RN2/ RN12 or RN Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality
