Job Overview

Primarily the role is concerned with delivering training in the deteriorating patient, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillation (AED) to all grades of staff across all specialties. In addition the post holder will have responsibilities, in quality assurance, clinical and training equipment provision and maintenance.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work with the Resuscitation Officers to provide a high-quality Resuscitation Service across the Trust to ensure compliance with locally and nationally agreed Trust standards. The post holder will assist in the implementation of training programmes for adult and paediatric basic life support techniques for all grades of staff. They will primarily be responsible for delivering this training as part of the Trust Statutory / Mandatory and Corporate Induction training programmes.

The post holder will be expected to work across all Trust sites and other external locations as required to meet the needs of the service. The post holder will be involved in the implementation of Trust policies relating to Resuscitation and support the development of policies within the department.

The post holder will support the administration of eLearning and the interface between L& D and HR systems.

Job responsibilities

Principle Responsibilities:

Assist in the implementation of a resuscitation training programme for all members of the multidisciplinary team throughout the Trust according to their expected degree of competence in practice.

Take an active lead role in the provision of basic life support training on the Trust Statutory/Mandatory and Corporate Induction training programmes and assist in developing schemes to disseminate basic life support training in a variety of flexible ways to maximise training capacity.

Ensure that all training is carried out in a standardised way in accordance with current evidence-based international and national resuscitation guidelines to ensure the provision of high-quality patient care, using agreed teaching methods during training delivery.

Assess basic clinical skills and provide remedial training and support for those who fail to meet the required standard. Will inform the Resuscitation Officers of any concerns with individual staff members competence.

Assist in disseminating information to staff regarding the Trust Resuscitation Policies and their application to practice.

Promote attendance at the Trusts mandatory resuscitation training sessions.

Assist in the dissemination of changes in evidence-based practice relating to resuscitation care in accordance with the Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines.

Support the Resuscitation Officers in the provision of current and future National Resuscitation Courses held at Mersey Care NHS Trust.

Patient Care:

Provide advice and support to staff about resuscitation equipment and any other related equipment.

Attend emergency calls with the Resuscitation Officers to develop and maintain clinical skills, expertise and credibility within the role.

Use knowledge and experience to identify and carry out a range of resuscitation procedures during a clinical emergency.

Be involved in post-resuscitation care until the patient is safely delivered to the appropriate clinical area as appropriate.

Ensure the health and safety of all staff, patients and relatives in relation to all resuscitation equipment used, acting immediately in the event of any potential hazards arising and reporting these to the Lead Resuscitation Officer.

Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients, families and colleagues.

Assist the Resuscitation Officers in the monitoring, auditing and spot checking of clinical areas in respect of the maintenance and checking of their resuscitation equipment. Ensure any deficiencies are rectified and communicated to the Lead Resuscitation Officer.

Advise staff of relevant protocols and procedures to ensure departmental resuscitation equipment is ready for use at all times and rectify and report any deficiencies to the Lead Resuscitation Officer.

To attend the Trust Resuscitation Committee as required.

To keep abreast of the ethical and legal aspects of the role.

Management and Leadership:

To assist the Lead Resuscitation Officer in providing an efficient and cost-effective Resuscitation Service within the agreed budget, having due regard to the use of all training resources to minimise unnecessary costs.

Will liaise closely with the Lead Resuscitation Officer but work primarily independently when teaching, effectively managing their own time to ensure training is delivered.

Will work independently within a defined set of parameters set by the Lead Resuscitation Officer.

Will be involved in policy implementation relating to Resuscitation within the Trust and support the development of policies within the department.

To assist in maintaining an accurate asset register of resuscitation equipment (clinical and training).

Ensure that all training equipment required is available and in good working order. Report any issues to the Resuscitation Officer.

Maintain accurate paper and computerised records of training and ensure copies are returned to the Training & Development Administrator in the Training & Development Team for entry onto the Trusts training database.

To assist the Lead Resuscitation Officer in the improvement of resuscitation practice by disseminating and promoting evidence-based practice protocols and policies related to the concepts of resuscitation and Do Not Attempt CPR DNACPR.

To undertake any other duties relevant to the post.

To maintain effective communication and relationships with other teams as appropriate.

To work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team, internal and external to the Trust in the provision of high standards of patient care.

To assist the Lead Resuscitation Officer in effectively communicating the work of the Resuscitation Service throughout the Trust and to other external agencies.

To impart knowledge to individuals and groups of staff in the classroom and workplace environment through teaching and presentation skills using presentation aids electronic, multimedia and written.

To assist in the development and maintenance of close links with ward and departmental managers for the staff groups being trained and departments supported by the Resuscitation Service.

Research and Audit:

Participate in trialling new products and training aids and evaluate and feedback to the Lead Resuscitation Officer.

Assist in the collection of audit data in relation to cardiac arrest calls/outcomes across sites and be involved in investigating any problems or difficulties under the guidance of the Lead Resuscitation Officer.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Level 5 Certificate in Adult Education or willing to work towards


Desirable

  • Registered Nurse or Nursing Associate


Knowledge/ Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of Resuscitation Council guidelines for BLS and use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Ability to make decisions and work autonomously or as part of a team
  • Experience of ESR/OLM
  • Ability to participate with the implementation of change, assist with and improving standards
  • Involvement in audit
