We are seeking a motivated, enthusiastic and suitably qualified Mammographer to join our friendly and dedicated Breast Imaging Team in the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job

The Breast Unit is a busy department working within both the National Breast Screening service and a Symptomatic Breast service. The ability to work both in a team and independently, and to communicate in a wide variety of settings, is essential.

The Newcastle Breast Screening Service delivers a screening service to a large rural area therefore a current driving licence and access to a car is essential.

Applicants for the above post must hold a degree in Diagnostic or Therapeutic Radiography, be HCPC registered and have working knowledge of NHS policies and procedures. A postgraduate qualification in Mammographic studies or equivalent as approved by NHS Breast Screening Programme is also essential.

The requirement for a female to undertake this role is a Genuine Occupational Qualification and is exempt under section 7(2) of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, superseded by The Equality Act 2010.

Job responsibilities

  • To work in the Breast Screening and Assessment Centre based at the RVI and in the community on 3 breast screening trailers that move around the North East region.
  • To be part of a team delivering a high quality efficient and effective radiographic service, to make an informed decision on the diagnostic images required and demonstrate a professional, caring and responsible approach to patients.
  • There is a potential commitment to evening and weekend working.
  • In collaboration with the Superintendent Radiographer, provide a screening, assessment and symptomatic service whilst helping to sustain and develop effective working relationships in close collaboration with professional colleagues.

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first months pay.

Person Specification

KNOWLEDGE

Essential

  • Working knowledge of all relevant professional and NHS policies and procedures
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of radiation protection and methods of reducing radiation dose as well as a working knowledge of ionising radiation legislation (IR (ME) R).
  • Evidence of CPD


Desirable

  • In-depth knowledge of the NHS Breast Screening Programme


SKILLS

Essential

  • Good organisational interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to work effectively in a team or independently as required.
  • IT skills necessary for Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS).


Desirable

  • IT skills
  • The post holder may be encouraged to take on additional responsibilities e.g. Radiation protection Supervisor (RPS), manual handling facilitator, Health and Safety Representative, Society of Radiographers (SOR) Representative, CPR trainer etc


QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • HCPC registered, BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent
  • Post Graduate qualification in a clinical speciality (e.g. mammography), or post graduate specialist short courses or relevant specialist experience


OTHER

Essential

  • Must have a current driving licence and be a car owner
