This is a fixed term post for 12 months to cover maternity leave within the service.
The post holder will be an integral member of the Diabetes Service specialist team, providing care, treatment and education to diabetes patients and their families. This will involve working closely with the community network of health care professionals to deliver an integrated package of care between hospital and primary care.
The Diabetes Service represents an integration of the entire multidisciplinary specialist team with responsibility for the quality of all diabetes services in Cumbria. We aim to improve the quality of diabetes care by delivering patient pathways with structured education programmes to support self-management, by supporting and training of primary care teams and providing excellent specialist diabetes clinical services in both in and out-patient settings.
The post holder will be based in Whitehaven however will be required at times to travel across North Cumbria.
Main duties of the job
A key aim of The Diabetes Service is to facilitate and encourage self-management by people with diabetes. Structured patient education programmes (DAFNE and DESMOND) are embedded in our pathways of care and training has been delivered to both primary care and specialist staff to undertake holistic care planning.
We provide speciality services including pregnancy, young person/ transition service and an insulin pump service. A Cumbria wide retinal screening service operates throughout Cumbria at a variety of locations.

- Degree level education
- NMC registration
- NST307 or equivalent
- Post-Basic qualification in specialist area (Diabetes e.g. Warwick Course A205, CIDC, Bradford Diabetes course) or will work towards within the first year of appointment

- Adult Education Teaching Certificate
- To have or be willing to undertake a diabetes related qualification such as Warwick or Bradford

- Significant general nursing experience within the NHS
- To have detailed knowledge of all aspects of diabetes and associated risk factors.
- To have the ability to work autonomously, efficiently and professionally locality wide visiting patients in General Practice surgeries, Health centres, community and acute hospitals and emergency home visits
- Experience of teaching adults

- To have or be willing to become a DESMOND/ DAFNE/ Walking Away trainer
- Experience of undertaking clinical audit
