The post holder will provide operational and clinical leadershipto a clinical therapy teamincluding staff of different grades and disciplines.
The post holder will work closely with the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Acute Team Leads to support team organisation and prioritisation processes. They will deputise for the Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist alongside other team leads provide advice in relation to occupational therapy matters and facilitate the resolution of workload/staffing issues.
The post holder will provide, highly specialist assessment and interventions for a caseload
of patients on acute medical and surgical wards demonstrating advanced clinical reasoning
skills and the ability to undertake assessment of complex patients including cognitive assessment, functional and environmental assessment, and to play an active role in discharge planning, identifying the needs of patients and making appropriate recommendations for their onward care or rehabilitation.

- To be able to motivate and persuade staff and patients, and deal with barriers to acceptance, through effective communication skills this may include negotiation and influencing skills.
- To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients allocated. To work within the standards and guidelines of the Trust, HCPC and RCOT code of ethics.
- To be familiar with and work in accordance with National Standards and guidelines.
- To plan, organise and prioritise own and team workloads to meet service demands and ensure seamless service provision.
- To undertake comprehensive review of pre-morbid function in patients referred for Occupational Therapy and be able to analyse the information to determine what assessments and treatment are required for a designated caseload.
- To carry out specialist assessments and complex clinical interventions with allocated cases and in a consultative capacity with other occupational therapists and staff as necessary.

- Hold a recognised degree or diploma in Occupational Therapy
- Current HCPC registration
- Evidence of relevant post graduate courses or training to post-graduate diploma level
- IELTS Level 7.0 or above (overseas candidates only)

- Member of relevant clinical special interest groups/sections.

Essential
- Evidence of extensive experience acquired at a minimum of band 6 level, working as an Occupational Therapist assessing and treating clients in the acute setting who present with a variety of medical conditions and/or co morbidities with resultant functional impairment.
- Evidence of extensive clinical experience in working as a specialist assessing and treating an acute medical caseload and/or an older people caseload at a minimum of Band 6 level.
- Evidence of supervision of less experienced staff, Band 6's, Band 5's, assistants, and students.
- Experience of Preceptorship and supporting new band 5's to meet their learning and development requirements
- Worked in the NHS or equivalent and are familiar with the NHS system and the role of the autonomous practitioner.
- Experience of planning ongoing treatment or care for patients in the acute setting and of making effective referrals to other agencies
- Experience of facilitating complex discharges from the acute setting and supporting less experienced staff to develop skills in discharge planning.
- Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and how to foster excellent team relations.
- Experience of successful partnership working with other agencies and services.

- Theoretical and practical knowledge of acute clinical presentations in the following speciality areas - cardiology, oncology, respiratory, gastroenterology and surgery. Demonstrate familiarity with a wide range of assessment and treatment procedures.
- Understanding/application of relevant clinical guidelines and /or current best evidence in acute medicine work specialty.
- Knowledge of the role of statutory and non-statutory services in supporting people on discharge from hospital
- Understanding of audit and its practical application.

- Physical ability to carry out the role, which involves manual handling of patients, travel in the community and frequent moderate effort for periods.
