An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 5 registered nurse to join the highly motivated and hardworking team on the Burns and Plastic surgery unit. We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and caring nurse who wants to develop their professional knowledge and ability. The post holder will work on the burns unit and this includes a negotiated development period in the burns unit outpatient dressing clinic. Both areas manage patients who are emergency admissions as well as having elective surgery for both specialities.

We offer great opportunities to develop your nursing skills and abilities. You will have a supernumerary induction period and preceptorship and will have time to visit areas within burns specialty. Personal and professional development is actively supported and there are numerous opportunities for staff development.

The Burns Unit delivers a 7 day / 24 hour service and you will be expected to work 12hr day and night shifts.

Our ward is very busy, with every day different. We have a high turnover of patients making the environment challenging yet very rewarding. The expectation is that you will deliver a high standard of service with patient safety and quality care as a priority.

We are part of the Cancer and Associated Specialities Division (CAS) and accept patients from other specialities in CAS.

A regional Burns and Plastic Surgery unit based at City Hospital campus, Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust. An 18 bedded unit with an outpatient dressing clinic and is a designated unit level service within the Midland Burn Operational Delivery Network.

Job responsibilities

We have a supportive, caring and skilled team of nurses dedicated to the delivery of exceptional patient care. Excellent communication skills, flexible working and a team approach are essential for this role. You should be educated to 1st level RN, have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to prioritise workload and work well as a team member. As a caring and positive person you will be committed to delivering high quality care whilst adhering to the trust values and behaviours.

- Admitting burn and plastics patients from ED's, Urgent Care / Minor Injury Units and Community services within the East Midlands.

- Pre and post operative care.

- Wound care- VAC therapy, large complex dressings, caring for flaps and skin grafts, leech and maggot therapy.

- Planning and implementing complex discharges.

- Holistic approach to all patients.

- Supporting new starters and students.

- Managing patient with physical, psychological and emotional needs.

Person Specification

Qualification

Essential

  • NMC Registration
  • Degree or Diploma


Desirable

  • Mentor Course
  • IV Drug Administration
  • Burns or Plastic Surgery Qualification
  • Tissue Viability training


Experience

Essential

  • Supervision of non registered staff and students
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in acute setting


Desirable

  • Evidence of mentor / preceptor experience
  • Evidence of recent development
  • Evidence of Wound experience


Communication

Essential

  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate IT skills
  • Recognition of own level of competence and limitations and communicate these to appropriate staff
