The East Genomic Laboratory Hub (East GLH) is one of seven hubs in the Genomic Medicine Service. The East GLH is based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the largest biomedical research campus in Europe home to two NHS flagship trusts, multiple world-class research institutes, the University of Cambridge Medical School and a thriving biopharma ecosystem. CUH is investing in leading specialised services across the region - including building new Children's and Cancer hospitals - and fostering innovation in health science and medical research.

Delivering Cancer Genomics testing to 31 NHS Trusts, serving over 9m people, is complex and challenging. The Cambridge Genomics Laboratory is therefore pleased to be recruiting experienced Clinical Scientists who can work in Solid Cancer.

The Cambridge Genomics Laboratory is the lead laboratory of the East GLH. It is a busy workplace undergoing transformation. The post holder will be able to analyse and report complex information to provide clinically relevant and timely reports to requesting clinicians.

You will join a dynamic establishment that iskeenly developing its staff, making a real difference to patients who are benefitting from the latest genomic testing technology.

Main duties of the job

1. Responsible for delivery of existing and prospective solid cancer services by leading delivery in a key area including line management of scientists2. Analysis, interpretation, presentation and authorisation of solid cancer clinical reports3. Advise and inform clinical colleagues on pertinent aspects of solid cancer service delivery4. Contribute to the training and supervision of scientific staff including project students5. Contribute to the evolution and strategic direction of cancer molecular services including compliance with internal and external quality regulations

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • First degree in an appropriate biological science
  • Completion of a formal training programme in Laboratory Genetics, OR postgraduate qualification (PhD or equivalent) in relevant subject and externally assessed clinical genetics laboratory experience
  • Completion of Part 1 FRCPath in Genetics OR PhD in relevant Human Genetics subject and actively preparing for part1 FRCPath


Desirable

  • Part 2 FRCPath in Genetics, or working towards


Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience of working as a Clinical Scientist
  • Research and development relevant to molecular genetic testing
  • Project management
  • Supervision / management of staff


Desirable

  • Experience in whole genome sequencing and other specialised molecular genetics methods applied to cancer genetics


Skills

Essential

  • Analysis of next generation panel and whole genome sequencing data in solid cancers
  • Able to organise and manage complex activities
  • Able to provide leadership and training to scientific, technical and clinical teams within the department, as required
  • Able to maintain intense concentration on important tasks despite frequent interruptions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to use and manipulate lab computer systems and standard software packages
  • Able to prepare and present complex scientific and clinical information at meetings or as part of a teaching commitment
  • Able to develop new policies and protocols
