The post holder will work closely with the cath lab manager and multi-disciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining excellent clinical standards of nursing practice and staff development as part of the cath lab team. Also, act as a care team leader ensuring the needs of the patients are met.

Supporting and deputising for the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in the clinical management of the clinical area. This will involve dealing with complex situations and having to take appropriate action in conjunction with the cathlab sister/charge nurse in emergency or unforeseen situations.

To be responsible for the continuing professional development and overall performance of all staff by acting as a mentor with the support of their senior colleagues.

To take part in the on -call / out of hours rota on a regular basis.

Main duties of the job

In partnership with other professionals provide excellent patient care. This process should include assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care in accordance with the Trust policies.

Following training and reaching a satisfactory level of competence, will operate medical equipment pertaining to the Cath Lab.

Ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to the Trust standard (including electronic records).

To assist the catheter laboratory Lead nurse / Sister in implementing, evaluating and maintaining a departmental ethos and a standard approach to the delivery of excellent nursing care.

Harefield Hospital has 4 cath labs with a 3 bay Recovery Unit. Our Primary PCI service holds one of the fastest average door to balloon time in the UK and our service continues to expand. We also undertake a variety of complex procedures including TAVI, EP and Device implantations.

The cardiac catheter labs closely interact and liaise with the wards, theatres and ITU to provide a smooth journey for the patient. The team consists of cardiologists, radiographers, nurses, cardiac physiologists, and healthcare assistants.

The team and the work we undertake has expanded considerably in the past few years and we are now in need of some help with our administration.

Job summary:

  • The post holder is expected to carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision and is required to demonstrate procedures, supervise qualified and/or unqualified staff whilst maintaining a safe working environment

Main tasks & responsibilities:

Patient/customer care (both direct & indirect)
  • In partnership with other professionals provide excellent patient care. This process should include assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care in accordance with the Trust policies.

  • Ensure that nursing documentation, including care pathways, are maintained to the Trust standard (including electronic records) and implement nursing audit of records to measure and evaluate care planning.
  • Ability to take on the role of cath lab coordinator to ensure the smooth running of the daily cath lab lists (utilising the electronic scheduling system) on a regular basis.
  • Participate in conducting nursing audit to achieve the agreed standards.
  • In conjunction with the staff team contribute to developing and maintaining a department ethos and a standard approach to the delivery of excellent nursing care.
  • Provide a holistic approach to patient care and maintain excellent clinical standards of nursing practice. Within the ethos of the department using research and evidence based practice.
  • Under the supervision of the lead nurse contribute and participate to the process of setting goals and benchmarking standards of care. Collaborating with other members of the team to ensure the patients needs are met to a consistently high standard.
  • Promote awareness and compliance amongst colleagues regarding Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.
  • To actively participate in the Trusts framework of clinical governance within the ward or department area.
  • To provide a suitable and safe environment for the physical, psychological and spiritual well being for staff, patients/clients and their relatives/carers.
  • Have continuing responsibility for the provision of a suitable, clean, uncluttered and safe environment for the physical and psychological well-being of staff, patients/clients and their relatives. Identify clinical risks and ensure that appropriate action is taken under the supervision of the modern matron/catheter laboratory manager, in accordance with the Trust Risk Management policy.
  • Identify and report clinical risks and report to the cath lab manager/modern matron so that appropriate action can be taken in accordance with the Trust risk management policy.
  • Record and report all incidents/complaints involving staff, patients and visitors in accordance with Trust policies and assist in any investigations as required.
  • To occasionally take charge of the clinical area, utilising resources effectively. Ensuring that safe staffing levels are maintained.
  • To delegate tasks and activities to a range of team members in relation to patient care, for example when taking charge or as link nurse.
  • To actively promote a healthy lifestyle for patients and staff in line with national strategy requirements.
  • To work in all areas of the Catheter Lab suite including the Recovery area.

Communication
  • To demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in dealing with patients/clients, visitors/relatives and colleagues - maintain good customer relations.
  • Contribute towards sharing good practice within the ward/department and Trust wide.
  • To promote a positive image of the Trust at all times.
  • To work cohesively with all members of the team in ensuring that the very best services to patients are provided at all times
  • To deputies in the absence of the Catheter Laboratory Manager / Lead Nurse for the coordinating of catheter laboratory activity.

People management
  • Actively manage own annual leave in line with Trust and local Policy and Procedure
  • Participate in the programme for clinical supervision as required.
  • Maintain a personal, professional profile, identifying role and skill developments in line with the Scope of Professional Practice.
  • Participate in the Trusts appraisal and personal development plan schemes by meeting with the manager / lead nurse at least annually and to take and perform appraisals on a delegated group of staff and to ensure personal development plans for individuals.
  • To assist the lead nurse on planning, implementing and evaluating a programme for clinical supervision for all registered nurses, as required, working in the Ward/Department in line with Trust guidance.

Resource management
  • To work together with the team to ensure effective use of resources & adequate stock levels.
  • To Help and assist the Cathlab Manager / Lead Nurse to recruit, retain and select staff within the budgeted establishment.
  • To work with the Catheter Lab Manager / Lead Nurse and support staff during any change or redevelopment of practice or services within the Catheter Labs environment.

Service development
  • To contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive learning environment for colleagues, patients and visitors.
  • To participate in staff education and development, including orientation and supervision and act as a mentor and a resource for learners and the nursing team.
  • Be aware of the service delivery plans.

Policy development
  • Under the supervision of the department manager to work on delegated projects relating to local policy development.
  • Lead on delegated projects relating to local policy development.
  • To be actively involved in the implementation of Trust policies and procedures at ward / department level, reinforcing their use.

Information management
  • Participate in the collection of audit and research data as required.
  • Identify areas where local audit is needed, conduct the audit and analyse the data with support ensuring CQUIN targets are met.
  • To have an active and intranet and email account and adhere to the Trusts Information Service and Information Governance Policies.
  • Use data which will contribute to the improvement of patient care.
  • Use the Trust internet to enhance care and for professional development.
  • Undertake relevant training for electronic information systems in place and under development.
  • Following Trust/local guidelines to access results from the PAS system.

Person Specification

Education & Qualification

Essential

  • Registered Midwife
  • Degree in Midwifery
  • Evidence of professional updating
  • ENB 997 or equivalent mentorship course.


Desirable

  • Relevant MSc or working towards MSc
  • Examination of the Newborn Course


Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Worked in a variety of settings utilising all midwifery skills
  • Significant relevant post registration experience
  • Experience of managing vulnerable families


Desirable

  • Management experience
  • Experience of interagency working


Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills with good verbal and written skills.
